The Call for Change • #1 complaint of potentially new “PoE adopters” and/or PoE installers is the inability to easily know if a system is compliant • Technology image is tarnished by low-cost, non-compliant, systems • Business channel has to account for high customer service/applications support to help debug non-compliant systems = higher costs for everyone • Situation is about to grow exponentially due to forecasted demand increase • Traditional end equipment (examples: IP Cameras and Wireless Access Points) growth • Expansion into new markets due to the ability to reach higher power levels • The industry needs an easy way to know if a system is compliant to existing IEEE802.3 standard and at what power level

  4. Certifications awarded at the SYSTEM, not component, level.

What’s Changing? • Companies (including IC vendors through the use of EVM certification) now have a way to easily identify their end equipment as compliant • Some questions PoE customers will ask: • Why should I care about this? • What does the logo mean? • Are TI’s solutions compliant? • How can my designs get the logo? • TI will be marketing our compliant designs strongly – emphasizing the ability for customers to “copy and paste compliance”

What does the Logo Mean? • System Conforms to Ethernet Alliance Certification Test Plan • Based on IEEE 802.3 PoE Standards • High confidence of interoperability between certified products • PSE / PD Logo Distinction • Class Number indicates maximum class supported (note: even the PSE logo utilizes Class designation – not Type) • Easy Interoperability: PD Class must be less than or equal to PSE Class • Read more here in our Blog PSE Class “4” Logo PD Class “1” Logo

What are the Types and Classes? • Current Certification (AKA “Gen 1”), in green, is available now • “Gen 2,” in red, to be become available ASAP following IEEE802.3bt ratification • The anticipated IEEE 802.3bt standard will add: • Types 3 and 4 • Classes 5-8 • Power levels up to 90W • Ratification expected September 2018

  18. Program Costs Note – Companies can join the Ethernet Alliance to only participate in the PoE Certification Program for as low as US$3,000.
