  1. Objective 5 Describe the distribution and function of the epidermal derivatives – sebaceous glands, sweat glands, nails and hair.

  2. Appendages of the Skin • Sebaceous glands • Produce oil called sebum • Lubricant for skin • Kills bacteria • Slows water loss • Most with ducts that empty into hair follicles • Glands are activated at puberty • All over body (except palms/soles)

  3. Appendages of the Skin • Sweat glands (Sudoriferous) • Widely distributed in skin – not on nipples and external genitalia – 2.5 million total • Eccrine -Open via duct to pore on skin surface • palms, feet, forehead = emotionally regulated • rest of body = temperature regulated • 99% water with salt 2. Apocrine • empty into hair follicles in anogenital/axillary region • Fatty substances and protein – can be milky • Hormonally and sexually triggered

  4. Sweat and Its Function • Composition • Mostly water • Some metabolic waste • Fatty acids and proteins (apocrine only) • Function • Helps dissipate excess heat • Excretes waste products • Acidic nature inhibits bacteria growth • Odor is from associated bacteria
