6 Elements of Geography 1. The world in spatial terms • Location-where something is • Absolute location-a specific description of where something is located. • Only 1 thing can be there • Examples: address, latitude/longitude, GPS coordinates • Relative location-a general description of where something is in relation to something else • Multiple things could possibly be there • Ex: next to McDonald’s, on Main St., corner of 61st & Mingo
6 Elements of Geography 2. Places and Regions PLACE REGION • -refers to the features that define an area and make a place unique • Ex. At 29,029 feet, Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. • Ex. The Grand Canyon is the deepest, most awe inspiring canyon in the United States. • areas that share at least one common characteristic • Political-based on actual boundaries set by the government • Physical-based on physical features • Cultural-based on culture traits
