  3. Marmot review • ‘People with higher socio economic position in society have a greater array of life chances and more opportunities to lead a flourishing life. They also have better health. The two are linked’ • ‘People with university degrees have better health and live longer lives than those without’

  4. B&NES figures • 8,000 claiming out of work benefits, of which: • 6,000 claiming for more than 2 years • 4,800 on incapacity benefit (E&SA) • Mainly male • 30% aged 50-59 • Many inactive since late 1990s • Often related to mental health • 830 lone parents on income support

A few Marmot review recommendations… • Provide easily accessible support and advice for 16-25 year olds • Provide work based learning, including apprentices • Prioritise active labour market programmes • Promote equality guidance and stress management guidelines to employers • Promote flexible retirement • Encourage flexible employment
