  3. Recent Data Taking Program • Since working on the DAQ last week (see VC slides V.Verguilov): • Positive beam particles: • 300 MeV/c pions - 4000 target pulses (translates to about 330,000 particles used for calibrating the TOF system) • 250 MeV/c pions - 350 target pulses (also for TOF) • 200 MeV/c pions - 450 pulses (also for TOF) • 300 MeV/c positrons - 1500 target pulses (calibration of CKOV and KL calorimeter) • 150 MeV/c positrons - 1200 target pulses (calibration of CKOV and KL calorimeter) • 330 MeV/c pions for study of Decay Solenoid effects on beam optics - 2000 pulses • 444 MeV/c piplus -to- muon beam • to understand beam optics for producing muons - 500 pulses • Pion beam at 330 MeV/c – Decay Solenoid beam dynamics study • Nominal setting at 550 A (3.1 T) • 9 settings higher and lower in steps of 0.15 T • Only required ~60 target pulses/point to get sufficient counts in TOF0 Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 3

  4. DS Study • Pion Beam at 330 MeV/c – Decay Solenoid beam dynamics study • Nominal setting at 550 A (3.1T) • 9 settings higher and lower in steps of 0.15 T • 100 target pulses/point to get sufficient counts in TOF0 • Run 1121 DS current down 0.30T Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 4

  5. DS Study II – Positive Particles • Run 1123 Nominal DS current • Run 1122 DS current lower 0.15T • Run 1125 DS current up 0.30T • Run 1124 DS current up 0.15T Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 5

  6. Recent Data Taking Program II • Since working on the DAQ last week (see VC slides V.Verguilov): • Friday – switched beamline polarity • Now running Negative beam particles: • 300 MeV/c pi- : 2800 target pulses (calibrating the TOF system) • 300 MeV/c electrons - 1500 target pulses (calibration of CKOV and KL calorimeter) • 150 MeV/c electrons - 1200 target pulses (calibration of CKOV and KL calorimeter) • 330 MeV/c pi- for particle rate vs beam loss study • 50mV, 100mV, 200mV, 300mV, 400 mV, 500 mV losses – 400 pulses/point (2400) • 444 MeV/c piplus -to- muon beam - 1500 • 337 MeV/c piplus -to- muon beam – 1550 • Optimization of Upstream Beamline Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 6

  7. Recent Data – 300 MeV/c pi- • Run 1172: 300 MeV/c pi- Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 7

  8. Recent Data – 444 MeV/c pi- to mu- • Run 1176: 444 MeV/c pi- to mu- (Saturday Oct3) Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 8

  9. Recent Data – 444 Mev/c pi+ to mu+ • Run 1163: 444 MeV/c pi+ to mu+ (Thursday Oct1) Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 9

  10. Muon Particle Rate Study • An initial study of muons in TOF1 as a function of beamloss was also done using a 337 MeV/c at target pi- to mu- beamline • 100mV - 15 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 4.2 muons/spill in TOF1 (assuming all hits are muons) • 200mV - 34 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 8.6 muons/spill TOF1 • 300mV - 44 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 10.7 muons/spill TOF1 • 400mV - 60 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 16.1 muons/spill TOF1 • 500mV - 71 particle triggers/spill TOF0 - 19.1 muons/spill TOF1 Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 10

  11. Optimization of Upstream Beamline • Simulation – triangles • Data from Sunday - circles Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 11

  12. Target Performance • Continues to do well – no problems • Stopped at 50,000 pulses at end of running Thursday • Sat/Sun – went on to final count of 62,650 • Target depth • Beam loss over time • 200 MeV/c pi+ • Inspected Sunday Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 12

  13. Target DAQ • Target DAQ • Moving closer Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 13

  15. Target Run Information II • Beam Loss/target position/dip timing pi- to mu- beam (Sat) • 611 mV BCD = 28.7 Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 15

  16. Detectors • KL installed/bolted to TOF1 • Incorporated into DAQ again • Problem with one FADC module – 6 channels on top of detector • TOF0 ch. 17 PMT still not reading out • All FADCs (except PMT 17) look good • Plots: 300 MeV/c electrons • FNAL BPMs not running now • Hardware problem probably – need check into veto/load signals FADCs PMT 17 PMT 18 Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 16

  17. Recent Data: TOF Calibration • Beginning to calibrate TOFs • Last year’s data……..This year… • Making progress..need more data.. 2009 330 MeV/c g 2008 2009: 300 MeV/c more statistics g Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 17

  18. Operations I • eLOG • Moved to IIT • Works great! Fantastic! • Temporary solution while work w/RAL networking to sort out heplnw17 • Magnets: • D2 • magnet H2O trips, Willie increased water flow slightly on access to DSA Wed • No problems since • Q4 • MPS water flow trips – Thursday every 45 minutes during running • Swapped out flow sensor Friday • Now ok – no trips over weekend • Danfysik will replace all flow sensors • Polarity switched • Capacity of distribution board checked • Ok – need few new fuses – may still want upgrade • Slow ramp of magnets – • Software written • Tested and did not work – ongoing • Beamstop not always cooperative – possible faulty controller connection Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 18

  19. Operations II • PPS • Need rack to RAL • John Alexander to RAL to integrate DSA into ISIS system – TBC • Shifters • Many thanks to my shifters • especially Pierrick Hanlet, Henry Nebrensky, and Ray Gamet • here for 1 week each! • Working very hard for MICE • Alarm Handler • Still need to sort out sound card • Need Decay Solenoid PVs into alarm handler to assist monitoring • Need DAQ variables into Alarm Handler • Need to understand ISIS beam loss vs MICE in MLCR • What exactly defines our limits? Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 19

  20. Next • ISIS shutdown Oct 5 – Nov 1 • Machine Physics period starts Nov 2 – need shifters • User Run ~Nov 9 through Dec 20 – need shifters • Next User Run – Feb/March 2010 • Calibrate detectors • Study effect of proton absorber? Build during shutdown • Install luminosity monitor Linda R. Coney – 5 Oct 2009 20

  21. Conclusions • Within the last month: • We are running again • New target • Higher loss limits • Decay Solenoid Operational! Routinely used. • Detectors working • Good NEWS – • Learning a LOT • Last year < 50 particles/spill, Now: averaging 160 – 200 • Running with negative or positive particles • We have seen MUONS!
