  3. Macdonald needed new investors • Why? • Approached 3 men • George Stephen – Bank of Montreal • Donald Smith – HBC • James J Hill – Railway investor • This group became known as the CPR Syndicate Investors

  4. Macdonald made 3 promises to them • 25 million once the railway was complete • Railway monopoly west of Lake Superior for 20 years • Tax exemptions for all of their land The Promise

  5. The first thing they did was change the CPRs route • Why? Route Change

  6. The railway building was going REALLY slow at the start • Began in 1881 • The CPR Syndicate fired their railway manager and began looking for a new one • Still had no clue how they were going to get through the Rocky Mountains Slow Start
