  2. Four Parts • Title, Source, and Date • Summary (at least 5 sentences) • Response (make a connection; at least 5 sentences) • Questions (at least two that weren’t answered)

  3. 1. “Lisa Ling Goes Inside Tent City” • The Oprah Winfrey Show and article, February 25, 2009 • http://www.oprah.com/world/Lisa-Ling-Goes-Inside-a-Tent-City_1 • http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Lisa-Ling-Goes-Inside-a-Tent-City

  4. 2. Summary (just the facts) • Tent cities are makeshift campgrounds for individuals who have lost their jobs and homes as a result of the recession. Jobs like construction, car sells, and truck drivers began to decline when spending decreased. Therefore, these individuals are beginning again. They live in deplorable conditions. Most lack access to those things that are considered basic needs like water, restrooms, showers, and food. Some are even so embarrassed they don’t want their families to know they live here.

  5. 3. REsp0nse (Your Opinion and Connection) • It is hard to imagine not having your basic needs met. We take so much for granted that we sometimes forget that there are people that don’t have what we have. It makes me more appreciative and understanding. When I don’t get things that I want, I can now think back to those that are less fortunate. I can be more thankful and I can give more. I have plenty of clothes that I no longer wear. There are organizations in my community that help people in need. The next time I clean out my closet I can donate and encourage my parents to do the same.

  6. 4. Questions • How many students/kids live in tent cities? • If it is illegal, what happens to those who are prosecuted? What is the charge?
