  1. Romans: 7. The Great Salvation Romans 3:21-31 p. 1039-1040

  2. Wonderful Salvation • Edward the Confessor – King of England 1042-66 • This place is “the land of the dying” • When we die we go to “the land of the Living” • But now ... the righteousness of God is revealed • v 21 picks up from Rom 1:17

  3. Rom 3:21-26 21  But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, being witnessed to by the law and the prophets, 22  the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith. For there is no distinction, 23  for all sinned and lack the glory of God, 24  being ‘righteoused’ freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25  whom God put forward as a propitiation through (his) faithfulness [or through faith], in/through his blood, to demonstrate his righteousness, because of the passing over of former sins, in the forbearance of God, 26  to demonstrate his righteousness in the present time, so that he might be righteous and the ‘righteouser’ of the one having the faith of Jesus.

  4. 1. Revealing the Great Salvation • Notice: • Righteousness is Key • All the action is by God • Emphasis on it being revealed, known. • “Propitiation” / Sacrifice of Atonement (v 24-25) • Absorbs or takes on the “wrath of God” • Cannot be subject to wrath - must be innocent • God pours out his wrath on Himself !!!

  5. 1. Revealing the Great Salvation ... • God’s righteousness • Has to be preserved !!! • A Consequent universe: • For every action – equal opposite reaction • It’s the foundation for Justice !! • For God to be righteous and the righteous-maker there had to be “propitiation” !!!

  6. 2. Receiving the Great Salvation • Issues of grammar and translation: • Phrase: “Greeting of Geoff” • “to John” (Geoff greets John) – subjective: Doer • “by John” (John greets Geoff) – objective: Receiver • Phrase “faith of Geoff” • “in John” (Geoff has faith in John) – subjective • “by John” (John has faith ‘of’ Geoff) – objective • BUT in English we say “IN” Geoff • Subjective and Objective meanings are phrased differently in English. • “Pistis” means faith or faithfulness

  8. 2. Receiving the Great Salvation ... • V 26 compare with 4:16 • “ekpisteosiysou” having the faith of Jesus (v 26) • “EkpisteosAbraam” having faith of Abraham (4:16) • TNIV has a difference “faith IN Jesus” • Preposition “ek” does not support this translation!

  9. Revealing it • God wants it known! • Because there is “only one God” • They have no other God !

  10. What if we each decide to reach one person with the Good News about Jesus in the next year?
