  3. Violence in Our Society • Violence- any act that causes physical or psychological harm to a person or damage to property • Homicide- the killing of one human by another • Television • Movies • Family Structure

  4. Violence and Teens • Much of recent violence has involved teens • Each year more than 120,000 teens are arrested for violent crimes • Many factors

  5. Gangs • Gang- Group of people who associate with one another and take part in criminal activity • Chicago and larger cities are the main issue, but it is spreading • Dangerous for everyone

  6. Weapons • Second leading cause of death for ages 10-24 • For every 1 person killed 4 are wounded • 35% of victims shot were carrying firearms • Gun owners should store unloaded and separate from ammunition

  7. Drugs • Drugs and violence go hand in hand • Affect ability to think and judgment • Crime happens more often when someone is under the influence

  8. Violence in Schools • Schools now keep all doors locked • Some schools even have metal detectors • Zero-Tolerance Policy- a policy that makes no exceptions for anybody • Growing problem • Don’t ever bring a weapon to school

  9. Shield Yourself From Violence: At Home • Lock doors and windows • Only open door for people you know well • Do not give out personal info over phone or computer • Never agree to meet someone alone that you met online • If someone comes to the door that you don’t know and attempts to enter, call 911 • Never shoot firearms in the house (we will discuss) • If you come home and door is ajar, call the police • Never tell a stranger you are home alone

Shield Yourself From Violence:Outdoors • Don’t walk alone at night • Avoid poorly lit streets • If someone is following you enter a public place • Never hitchhike/Accept rides from strangers • Avoid entering an elevator alone with a stranger • Don’t look like an easy target • If someone robs you, give up the possessions • If you’re attacked, scream, or get away any way you can • At your age, do not carry a weapon

  11. Protecting yourself from violence • Develop self-protection habits • Be alert • Plan ahead • If you hear someone talking about violence at schools REPORT IT • Choose friends wisely • Avoid risky situations

  12. Preventing Violence • Holding rallies to stop particular kinds of violence • Support laws that help strengthen safety • Installing lighting in parks and playgrounds • Breaking gang control • Neighborhood watch programs • Support teen curfews • Teach non-violent conflict resolution • More police in certain areas

  13. Rape • Unwanted physical contact • Avoid areas where you’re alone • Avoid areas that are secluded
