Oregon’s education challenges • 1 in 5 Oregonians (515,077) lacks a high school diploma (30,000 others have diploma but little English) • Ranked 46th in college credential attainment • Ranked 46th in percent of income needed to attend community college (ranks 30th for state aid) • Ranks 39th in chance for college by age 19 • Just 58% of 18-24 year olds whose parents did not attend college have a high school diploma (vs. 89% for others) • From 1987 to 1998, the proportion of 18- to 24-year-olds with a high school credential decreased from 86% to 76%.
