  3. IEEE-USA faces Challenges: • Declining US membership base (& revenues). • Meeting professional needs of USA members. • Supporting technical literacy and STEM education. • Supporting consultants and entrepreneurial members. • Shaping public policy; defending the engineering profession; and fending off well-funded lobbyists. • Attracting young professionals and supporting students. • Mentoring and training our volunteers. • Weak Geo Unit infrastructure; subsidized & limited activities. • Perception: “IEEE is old-fashioned”.

  4. What is Needed • Build up the brand; manage perceptions by improving communication about what we do for the average member. • Mobilize members to address pressing policy issues. • Reinvigorate our communication pathways for the 21st century. • Use alternate delivery mechanisms for our materials and messages. • Support student professional awareness (SPAX). • Support YP’s starting in their careers. • Deliver cost effective training and mentoring for the grassroots volunteers. • Energize professional activities at the grassroots.

  5. Path Forward: Become the IEEE‘Professional Applications Society’ • Professional Activities is going global • Play to our strengths; shore up weaknesses • Strengths:National efforts in STEM, Policy, Lobbying, Support of ‘the Profession’ et al. • Weaknesses:translation from national efforts to local activities • Create Geo Unit delivery vehicles (SIGs) to provide structures and local focus for activities • Without structure nothing long-term happens • Committees at national, SIGs at Sections (‘feet on the ground’) • Provide Volunteer Training at Regions & web

  6. Develop Communities and Leaders • Series of Yearly Conferences on key areas: • Policy Flagship (in DC) [e.g. tutorial session, Congress visits, SME workshops] • STEM (eg STEM Measures Workshop) • Consulting/Small Business/Entrepreneur • IP issues • Ethics (co-sponsor) • Carbon (co-sponsor) • Energy Futures (policy) • Imperatives: Humanitarian, Competiveness…
