  1. Natural Substances Helpful in Atherosclerosis

  2. Hardening or narrowing of arteries due to a waxy plaque buildup within blood vessels is known as atherosclerosis. When left uncontrolled, it leads to serious cardiovascular complications. For example, a plaque buildup in the coronary arteries is a common cause of a heart attack. • In order to prevent the development and/or minimize the negative effects of atherosclerosis, the following foods and nutrients should be incorporated into our daily diet as they have been found helpful in slowing down the progression of this treacherous disease:

  3. Pomegranate: In a human clinical study, this fruit has been found effective in reducing the thickness of carotid artery by up to 29 percent within one year. Pomegranate has also been found helpful in lowering blood pressure, fighting infection, reducing inflammation, and preventing cholesterol oxidation.

  4. Arginine: Various clinical and pre-clinical researches have revealed that this amino acid prevents progression of atherosclerosis. It also helps in reversing atherosclerosis by stimulating the production of nitric oxide in the endothelial cells. • Garlic: This popular herb has been found effective in reducing cardiovascular risk factors. An in vitro research has been confirmed that garlic inhibits arteriosclerotic plaque formation. Another study revealed that an aged garlic extract can reduce the calcification of coronary artery.

  5. B-Complex: Multiple human studies have confirmed the benefits of B-vitamins in reduction and reversal of atherosclerotic plaque buildup. For example, B-vitamins have been found effective in decreasing the thickness of carotid artery in patients at risk for cerebral ischemia.
