  1. Jeopardy

  2. GAME RULES: • Room split into 2 teams (RIGHT Vs. LEFT) • Winner of the coin toss decides the first question • Each team will have 1 person compete at a time. • If the team answers incorrectly the other team has a chance to answer • If you think you know the answer raise your hand • The original team gets one last chance to steal. • Points on regular questions are ONLY ADDED (not lost) • The score will be kept on my little whiteboard • There are 2 Daily Double questions in the first round, which are worth any amount that the team wishes to bet, but if you get it wrong, you lose the points.

  5. The mouse has led you astray, please pick again!!

  6. 100 • Q The measure of energy required to remove an electron • A Ionization Energy

  7. 200 • Q Describe and explain the trend in atomic radius across a period • A Effective nuclear charge is larger going right, so atom is smaller

  8. 300 • Q Describe and explain what happens to the size of a particle when it gains an electron • A Anions are bigger than atoms because the smaller effective charge can’t hold the electrons

  9. 400 • Q Describe and explain the trend in Electron Affinity • A Energy change on anionization. Most exothermic for F. Nobles and Alkalines DO NOT DO.

  10. 500 • Q What is electronegativity? How is it measured? • A Desire of an atom for foreign electrons. It is not measured. It is assigned.

  11. 100 • Q Name and show the most active family of metals on the periodic table • A Alkali – group 1

  12. 200 • Q What family has a valence structure of s2p5 • A Halogens

  13. 300 • Q What are all the families on the p block, and what groups are they? • A triels (13), tetrels (14), pnictogens(15), chalcogens(16), halogens (17), nobels(18)

  14. 400 • Q Name three families that Strontium belongs to • A Alkaline Earth, Metals, Main Group

  15. 500 • Q What electron sublevel do the Actinides fill last? • A 5f

  16. 100 • Q How many orbitals are in the d block? • A 5

  17. 200 • Q Modern Periodic law places atoms in order of • A atomic number

  18. 300 • Q The father of the modern periodic table is • A Mendeleev

  19. 400 • Q Compare and Contrast Mendeleev and Meyer • A Both: order = mass; postulate missing atoms Mendeleev only = predict missing atoms’ behavior; switch atoms order if behavior doesn’t match.

  20. 500 • Q Name the 4 other contributing scientists to the PT and what they did, aside from Mendeleev and Meyer • A Dobereiner – triads; Newlands – mass order and octaves; Mosley – atomic number order; Seaborg – f block.

  21. 100 • Q How many valence electrons do the Alkalines have? • A 2

  22. 200 • Q Give the short electron configuration for Selenium • A [Ar]4s23d104p4

  23. 300 • Q What atom has valence electrons 5s24d2 A Zr

  24. 400 • Q What is a chump? What type(s) of atom(s) is (are) chumps? • A chumps lose electrons. Metals and metalloids are chumps.

  25. 500 • Q Describe what ion Aluminum would make, and why? • A 3+ because it is closest to Ne and needs to lose 3 electrons to get there!

  26. 100 • Q Which is a metalloid: Al, Ar, As, or Ag? • A As (arsenic)

  27. 200 • Q Describe and name the rule that determines what kind of ion a main group element will make • A Octet Rule – they want 8 ve’s

  28. 300 • Q What is bigger, and why: Na or K • A K – extra PEL

  29. 400 • Q What is bigger and why: Na or Mg? • A Mg – same number PEL’s, stronger effective nuclear charge

  30. 500 • Q What is smaller and why (2 reasons): Na or Na+ • A Na+ – loss of PEL and stronger effective nuclear charge

  31. 100 • Q According to Mr. Man, what EVIL alkali metal bursts into flame when exposed to water? • A Potassium

  32. 200 • Q According to Mr. Man, what element was responsible for the deaths of the dirigible passengers in 1937? • A Hydrogen

  33. 300 • Q According to Mr. Man, what color is oxygen, and what is special about it? • A it’s blue and magnetic

  34. 400 • Q According to Mr. Man, what reaction did some Berkley Students use to cripple their version of SEPTA? • A thermite: iron oxide and aluminum forms pure, molten iron

  35. 500 • Q According to Mr. Man, what element should you have your house tested for? • A Radon Gas
