  1. Subject and Predicate Where are subjects and predicates found in a sentence? How do we determine whether a subject or predicate is simple or compound?

  2. The Subject

  3. The subject tells whom or what the sentence is about. Examples: Swimming is good exercise. The pitcher struck her out. How kind you are! 1. The Subject

  4. The simple subject is the main word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about. Example: The four new students arrived early. 2. The Simple Subject

  5. The complete subject consists of all the words that tell whom or what a sentence is about. Example: The four new students arrived early. 3. The Complete Subject

  6. A compound subject occurs when two or more subjects are joined together by a conjunction (and, but, so, yet, or). Example: Dolphins and porpoiseslook a little like fish. Warning! The Compound Subject

  7. Ray Bradbury is also a writer of science fiction. The Golden Apples of the Sun is a collection of his stories. Is your favorite story in that book “A Sound of Thunder”? Let’s Practice! Circle the subjects and underline the COMPLETE subject.

  10. The predicate (verb) of a sentence tells something about the subject. Examples: The phone rang. Outside the tent was a baby bear. 1. The Predicate

  11. The simple predicate (verb) is the main word or word group that tells something about the subject. Example: The pilot broke the sound barrier. 2. The Simple Predicate

  12. The complete predicate(verb) consists of a verb and all the words that describe the verb and complete the meaning. Example: The pilot broke the sound barrier. 3. The Complete Predicate
