  42. Bellwork Study Flashcards 5 minutes alone, 5 minutes with a partner, and 5 minutes with your group. (Use all flashcards from this unit and the previous unit.) Turn in the Vocabulary and Packet from yesterday. Have your notebooks open to page 22 and be ready to copy notes. Make sure you have colored pencils/markers if you need them.

  43. Pg. 22 Additional Notes You will COPY all these notes on the sheet I am giving you onto page 12. While you are doing this I will be coming around to check your work from yesterday. You will have 30 minutes to copy these notes.

  44. What are Macromolecules? • Macromolecules – large organic molecules (meaning they contain carbon) used for various functions in living things • We can’t live without them!! • EVERYTHING we will learn for the rest of the semester will be based upon one of these macromolecules

  45. Monomers and Polymers Most macromolecules are polymers, built of monomers. • Monomers: small, basic unit (ex. think Brick) • Polymers: complex structure made of monomers (ex. think Brick House)

  46. Types of Macromolecules: • Carbohydrates • Lipids • Proteins • Nucleic Acids

  47. Carbohydrates • Main Function= short-term ENERGY • Other uses = structure/support • Found in: sugar and starch (therefore breads, pastas, fruits and veggies)

  48. 2 types of Carbohydrates: a. Monomer = Monosaccharides – single sugar molecules • Ex. Glucose, Galactose, Fructose b. Polymer = Polysaccharides – large molecules formed by monosaccharides. • Ex. Starch, Glycogen, Cellulose

  49. Energy Storage of Carbs • 4 calories/milligram • Because it is short term energy, your body can access it very easily so it is the FIRST thing you will break down to get energy when you need it!
