  1. Earths Interior and the Solar System 5.E.1.1.

  2. Layers of the Earth • Crust- Solid rock layer. • Mantle- Semi liquid rock. • Core-Solid iron.

  3. Tectonic Plates • Plates float on the mantle. • The plates move and interact with each other. • Plate interactions cause- Earthquakes Mountains Volcanoes

  4. Earthquakes Earthquakes are caused by tectonic movements in the Earth's crust. The main cause is when tectonic plates collide.

  5. What else can Earthquakes Cause? Tsunamis!

  6. Mountain BuildingOrogeny • Orogeny is the process of mountain-building. It takes place when two tectonic plates come together. A plate is crumpled and thickened to form mountain ranges, and involve a great range of geological processes.

  7. Volcanoes • A volcano is a mountain where lava (hot, liquid rock) comes from a magma chamber under the ground. • Eruption

  8. Changing • Earth’s surface is constantly changing. Erosion Weathering

  9. Erosion Erosion is the process by which materials are removed from the surface and transported to another location.

  10. Weathering Weathering is the breaking down of rocks, soils and minerals as well as artificial materials through contact with the Earth's atmosphere and waters. Weathering occurs in situ, or "with no movement", and thus should not be confused with erosion.

  11. Planets Solar System!

  12. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest planet in the Solar System.

  13. Venus is close in size to Earth (0.815 Earth masses), and, like Earth, has a thick silicate mantle around an iron core, a substantial atmosphere and evidence of internal geological activity. However, it is much drier than Earth and its atmosphere is ninety times as dense.

  14. Earth • is the only planet known to have current geological activity, and is the only place in the Solar System where life is known to exist.

  15. Mars • Smaller than Earth and Venus • Its surface, peppered with vast volcanoes and rift valleys.

  16. Jupiter is 2.5 times the mass of all the other planets put together!

  17. Saturn • is distinguished by its extensive ring system

  18. Uranus • is the only planet to orbit the Sun on its side; its axial tilt is over ninety degrees.

  19. Neptune • Slightly smaller than Uranus, but more dense. • This planet was the first to be found on mathematical prediction, rather than observation.

  20. Pluto • Is no longer considered a planet. • Now it is considered a Dwarf Planet.
