  1. Central Lakes Regional Planning Team Dual Credit Tool Kit: Using APA Formatting

  2. Dual Credit Tool Kit: APA • The APA (American Psychological Association) sets style guidelines for students writing essays • The guidelines include standard formats for an essay including: • Style (font, paper size, layout etc) • In-text citations (how your cite your sources in an essay) • Reference list (just like a bibliography)

  3. Dual Credit Tool Kit: APA Style facts: ✔ Use Times New Roman, 12 pt font ✔ Use 1” margins ✔ Always double-space your work ✔ Use a header (title) in the upper left-hand corner of every page ✔ Number every page in the top right-hand corner of every page • Why do we have to know this? • Avoid plagiarism • Give credit to the author(s) • Follow style guide

  4. Dual Credit Tool Kit: APA Four main sections of an APA paper: • Title page • Abstract • Main body • References Title page example: INVESTIGATING PATIENT CARE 1 Investigating Patient Care Dual Credit Student Georgian College

  5. Dual Credit Tool Kit: APA Abstract: • This section is a summary of your findings in your paper • Include your running header from previous pages Abstract example: • The study is to show how even a “sport” video game can incorporate many types of learning, to call attention to what might be overlooked as significant forms of learning, and to understand and take advantage of the opportunities video games afford as more deliberate learning environments. The aspects explored are the skills and techniques required to be successful in the game, the environment that skaters skate in, the personal vs. group identity that is shown through the general appearance of the skater, and the values and icons that the game teaches players. We are finding that sport video games support learning; we hope to find how one learns about oneself as a learner from playing.

  6. Dual Credit Tool Kit: APA • Main body: • Double space • Use in-text citations • Use clear, concise and active language • “We asked participants” instead of “Participants have been asked” Main body example: • THE FIRST TELECOMMUNICATIONS POLICY • Once the technology behind the telephone improved enough for widespread use, there were many carriers to choose from in Canada. In 1905, there were 83 independent telephone companies operating in Canada. The issue was service between Bell and the independents. • Indeed entry by independents gave rise to a flurry of anticompetitive activity on the part of Bell, carefully designed to stall and, if possible, reverse growth of the insurgents. In the case of multiparty rural lines, for example, Bell often granted urban interconnections but only on condition that Bell be afforded control over all further connections; sometimes Bell interconnected with one company to eliminate connections for others, a ploy to put the latter out of business. (Babe, 1988) • To solve this issue, the government brought all telephone companies under the control of the Board of Railway Commissioners in 1906, giving it power to set prices and contracts. Dramatic growth followed, but Bell Canada reigned over the hundreds of independents.

  7. Dual Credit Tool Kit: APA In-text citations: • Used throughout the essay • Variety of ways to incorporate these – see your handout for options In-text citation example:  Many others agree with the assessment that “this is a seriously flawed study” (Methasa, 1994, p. 22) and do not include its data in their work. The in-text citation is the information in the brackets above

  8. Dual Credit Tool Kit: APA References: • At the end of the paper • On its own page • Alphabetized by author’s last name • Double spaced • Hanging indentation • Highlight text • Go to Format • Go to Paragraph • Choose Indentation • Choose Special - hanging References Bouck, E.
