Evidence-based Design in Emergency Departments • Using evidence-based design is key to designing an efficient emergency department. • By analyzing the conditions of hospital care, one can use the data to increase the quality of care experienced by patients. • This corresponds to lower stress levels in patients and staff alike.

  3. EBD Principles and Efficiency • EBD principles can help determine which areas require the most attention. • For example, fast-tracks for lower risk patients can allow greater focus on higher risk ones. • Decentralized work stations allow nurses to respond more rapidly and fluidly to emergency situations.

  4. Implementation of EBD • Waiting areas that are subdivided allow for privacy and comfort for patients and families. • Using rooms with flexible layout and noise-reduction technology provides relief and lower stress for geriatric patients.
