  5. The term “Nutraceutical” was coined from “Nutrition” & “Pharmaceutical” in 1989 by • Stephen DeFelice, • MD, Founder and Chairman of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine (FIM). • Other words used in the context: • Dietary supplementation, Functional, Multi-functional Foods, etc.

  6. Nutraceutical can be defined as • “ A food or part of food or nutrient, that provides health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of a disease.”

  8. Conventional Foods as a Functional Food • Foods that are inherently functional • Foods that have naturally present constituents that are functional • For example: apple, broccoli, soy, fish, etc.

Fortified & Enriched Foods as a Functional Food • Foods that are imposed functional • Foods that functional components are added to • For example:fortified nutrients added to fruit juices Food fortification is basically the process of adding micronutrients (essential trace elements and vitamins) to food stuffs..
