  1. Key Stage 3 A suggested Year 8-9 Project: A Mobile Phone Holder Fabrication RA Moffatt WELB

  2. Learning Opportunities: To introduce pupils to modelling using paper & card; To introduce pupils to the constraints of the material / acrylic; To introduce Templates, jigs, measurement, marking out, drilling, filing, folding and line bending acrylic sheet; To develop basic graphics and design skills and techniques; To develop manufacturing skills through a range of workshop processes; drilling, filing, line bending etc. To develop computer aided design / CAD, skills. Activity Description: Theory / Workshop demonstration: The pupils study the process / constraints of accurately filing to an internal radius approximately 3 x 35min periods; Manufacture: To manufacture accurately to a profile / template or pattern and to understand a basic working drawing / template; Applied Design: to design and manufacture the body of the Mobile Phone Holder.

  3. A Mobile Phone Holder • Design Opportunities: • Show using concept sketches three alternative designs • for the body of the Mobile Phone Holder; • b) Measure the overall size of your mobile phone; • Use card or paper to make two templates or mock-ups to • help estimate or calculate the size of the holder and use these • models for test purposes; • Explain using graphics and using an exploded sketch show how the • stand will be located to the base and to the phone holder; • e) Show two other alternative designs for the base of this project; • f) Show examples of where an interference-fit and a clearance-fit • is used in this project; • g) Name two suitable materials for the base and rod for this • design and explain why these materials are suitable? • Collect four catalogue clippings that may be used as reference • materials when designing this project. Make notes to this material • explaining how this has influenced or inspired you.

  8. Starting point!

  9. Computer Aided Design CAD Drawing

  10. CAD drawing proposed idea for a mobile phone holder

  11. Concept Sketches / First ideas!

  12. Concept Sketches / first ideas!

  13. Inspiration! A Commercial Product extracted from the internet I got the idea for the shape of the sides from the existing design and used CAD, to personalise my design / solid modelling using Solid Works The body / base may be manufactured - acrylic plastic;

  14. Development of your idea! Designing for manufacture!

  15. CAD Drawing

  16. Development of an Idea

  17. Development of the Idea!

  18. Use of Metal! Although the above design is quite attractive the processes are much too difficult for the pupils! Alternatively the Phone Holder body may be fabricated from aluminium! Brazing rod / coat hanger could be used for the stand! Base could be made from acrylic / wood etc.
