Acquire- Hurricane Data • What is a storm surge? • A large amount of water that hits the coastline where a hurricane is coming through. • Why is storm surge such a huge problem in the Gulf of Mexico instead of places like the Atlantic Ocean? • There is lower pressure in the Gulf of Mexico. • Explain the three causes of storm surge. • When lowpressurebuilds, water from the ocean is sucked to the middle of the storm. • Hurricanes • Wave and tide action • What makes storm surge so devastating? • When the surge reaches the coast, it destroys everything in its path, and buildings that aren’t specifically designed to handle a storm surge will get crushed.
