  1. Semi-COlons A Little of this and a little of that

  2. A REVIEW • Simple sentences are: S • A subject: what the sentence is about V • Averb: what the subject is doing or being O • Optionally, an object: what completes the verb • And, it must be a complete thought.

  3. A Simple Sentence A REVIEW • So, a simple sentence is: SS S V O + + = And also… S S V V And so on…

  4. The Compound Sentence A REVIEW • When two simple sentences have fallen in love, they can spend all of their time together. It is my favorite color I like blue the most. , so SS SS I like blue the most , so it is my favorite color.

  5. The Semi-colon • The Semi-Colon is the other type of connection for two simple sentences to become one compound sentence. • The Semi-Colon has the same function as a comma and conjunction – it separates two simple sentences. • The relationship between the simple sentences is important (we’ll look at this later). , C ; =

  6. The Semi-Colon • Semi-colon looks exactly like what it does. . • The period ends a sentence. ; • The semi-colon ends and connects. , • The comma connects.

  7. The Semi-Colon • The semi-colon is surprisingly easy once you see what it does. SS SS ; THIS IS SENTENCE PATTERN 4 • It is my favorite color. • I like blue the most. • I like blue the most; it is my favorite color.

  8. Some more examples ; The ice cream truck man drove by my house today . He had big hairy knuckles. My aunt also had hairy knuckles; she loved to wash and comb them. WARNING! Don’t use a conjunction with a semi-colon. My aunt’s knuckle hair is magnificent, but I have no desire to touch it.

  9. When should I use a semi-Colon? • Use a semi-colon when the two simple sentences have a relationship (like that connection we talked about with commas and conjunctions). • I fought the bear and won. I also never kiss plague rats on the mouth. I gnaw on old car tires; it strengthens my jaw for bear combat. • The fact that you defeated the bear has no connection to plague rats, so a period is necessary. • The relationship between gnawing on tires and combatting bears is strengthened by using a semi-colon.

  10. LET’S CHECK OUR KNOWLEDGE • What’s wrong with the following sentences? • 1. I love to eat mayonnaise a lot; for it tastes like angel tears. • 2. Ricky ate a unicorn burger, and danced the night away. • 3. The two dinosaurs agreed on who to eat they high-fived at the brilliance of their decision. • 4.
