  1. Light Upper Room Christian Fellowship June 9, 2019

  2. Light • Mentioned 278 times in NKJV • Jesus said “I am the light of the world” John 8:24 • “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all” 1 John 1:5 • “You are the light of the world.” Matt 5:14 • Is this literal or metaphorical? • Just what is light? • What does this mean for us?

  3. Physical LightWaves • Electromagnetic waves • Like water waves – needs a medium • Yet it passes through outer space (vacuum)

  4. Physical LightParticles • Photon Particles • Yet passes through solids like glass

  5. Physical LightWaves or Particles? • Both and Neither…still being studied

  6. Physical Light – What do we know? • Photons smaller than electrons - random • Speed limit = 186,000 miles/second • Sun to Earth – 8 min 17 sec • Slower in glass (124,000 miles/second) • Straight lines (mostly)

  7. Physical Light • Our eyes are designed to perceive these as colors • Infrared • Ultraviolet

  8. Physical Light • Reflects

  9. Physical Light • Reflected and Absorbed (converts into heat)

  10. Physical Light • Powers all life on earth

  11. Physical Light • Powers all life on earth

  12. Physical Light • Powers the weather – waters the earth

  13. Physical Light Summary • Travels here in just the right amounts • Perfectly designed for us to “see” • Powers all life on earth • Properly heats the earth • Powers water circulation • AMAZING CREATION!

  14. Physical Darkness

  15. Physical Darkness

  16. Physical Darkness • Not a physical phenomena • It is only the ABSENCE of light • Darkness does not grow and shrink • Darkness does not reflect and refract • Darkness CANNOT overcome light • Darkness and light CANNOT co-exist

  17. Light versus Darkness • Hell is … • Utter darkness – no visual inputs • Bottomless pit – no tactile inputs • Wailing and gnashing of teeth – torturous auditory inputs • Total isolation– from God, people, reality • God uses the words “light” and “darkness” to help us understand spiritual truths. • Physical and Spiritual are CONNECTED

  18. What I Hope to Cover • God created light • Light accompanies God • God is light • Light reveals God to us • For Understanding/Direction • For Judgement • Walk in Light • Be Light to those who walk in darkness • The future of light

  19. God Created Light In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darknesswason the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (Gen 1) • Darkness, water, formless void existed • Spirit of God was hovering …

  20. God Created Light 3Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. (Gen 1)

  21. God Created Light • Light is the first thing God created • Before there were plants/animals • Before there was a sun/moon/stars • Light existed separate from all of these other created things • Darkness still existed • Spatial separation – day and night • Temporal separation – “first day”

  22. God Created Light • “Light” – “owr” in Hebrew (pronounced orh) • Meaning • Illumination • Like the light we see on a cloudy day • Separate from the SOURCE of the light • Cannot be plural

  23. God Created Light Jump now to the fourth day … 16Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. (Gen 1)

  24. God Created Light • “Lights” – “ma’-owr” in Hebrew (ma-orh) • A source of light (sun, moon, etc) • Can be plural And let them be for lights (ma’owr) in the firmament of the heaven to give light (‘owr) upon the earth: and it was so. (Gen 1:15) • God created “light” before he created “lights” • On the fourth day

  25. Light Accompanies God • Whenever God enters our world, there is light - illumination! 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. 23 They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light(‘owr) in their dwellings. (Exodus 10)

  26. Light Accompanies God As the Israelites wandered… 21And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light (‘owr), so as to go by day and night. (Exodus 13)

  27. Light Accompanies God At the Birth of Jesus… 8Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory (apparent brightness) of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. (Luke 2)

  28. Light Accompanies God When Peter was in prison… Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the prison; and he struck Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise quickly!” And his chains fell off his hands. (Acts 12)

  29. Light Accompanies God When Jesus appeared to Paul… 6“Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me. 7 And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’ 8 So I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’ (Acts 22)

  30. God is Light 5This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. (I John 1:5) He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness,And light dwells with Him. (Daniel 2:22)

  31. God is LightSpiritual Illumination • To reveal Himself to us • For understanding life’s issues • For direction in life’s journey • For judgement of right and wrong

  32. Light reveals God to us Isaiah’s prophecy: God speaking to Jesus… Indeed He (God) says, ‘It is too small a thing that You (Jesus) should be My Servantto raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, that You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” (Is. 49:6)

  33. Light reveals God to us Jesus… 45And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. (John 12) Paul… For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (II Cor 4:6)

  34. For Understanding/Direction The Lord is my light (‘owr) and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? (Ps 27:1a) Your wordis a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Ps 119:105) Oh, send out Your light (‘owr) and Your truth! Let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your tabernacle. (Ps 43:3)

  35. For Judgement For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. (Luke 8:17) 21But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” (John 3:21)

  36. For Judgement Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. (I Cor 4:5)

  37. Walk in Light We can feel, hear, smell, but seeing with light is necessary to fully understand and move in life. Jesus… “Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you” (John 12:35) Paul… 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (Ephesians 5:8)

  38. Walk in Light But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. (I John 1:7)

  39. A Light to those in Darkness 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. (Matt. 5) 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matt. 5)

  40. What Have we Covered? • God created light • Light accompanies God • God is light • Light reveals God to us • For Understanding/Direction • For Judgement • Walk in Light • Be Light to those who walk in darkness

  41. The Future of Light • Light involves flame/reactions • Waves and particles • Photons… • But there is something beyond this… • Light (‘owr) before lights (ma’owr) were created • There will be light (‘owr) after lights (ma’owr) go out….

  42. The Future of Light The new Jerusalem: 22But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. (Rev 21)

  43. The Future of Light 5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever. (Rev 22) Physical Illumination … But also Spiritual… Revelation, Understanding, Guidance, Judgement

  44. Conclusion Creation is Awesome God created light, and is light Physical or Metaphorical? YES - BOTH O house of Jacob, come and let us walk in the light of the Lord. (Is 2:5)
