  2. AGNES MACPHAIL • Born in March 1890 • Grown up in a farming family • Became a teacher for different schools in southwestern Ontario • Joined the United Farmers of Ontario • Women’s branch the United Farm Women of Ontario • A journalist for “Farmer’s Sun” • Died in 1954 – 64 years old

  3. Election Act • The government gave women the right to vote and stand for election • Macphail became a member of the newly formed Progressive Party of Canada • Represented the rural vote • Macphail won the election • First Canadian Women to: • Elected to the House of Commons

  4. She Was…. • First female elected to : • House of Commons • Ontario Legislative Assembly • Re-elected in campaigns of 1925, 1926 and 1930 • The voice for the rural issues • Part of the Ontario Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) • About to be appointed as the Canadian Senate

  5. Visited prisoners and demanded to improve their living conditions • Help found the Elizabeth Fry Society of Canada • Fought for old-age pensions, farmers’ co-operatives • Argued for : • Equal rights • Fair treatment for farmers and miners • Women

  6. Voted for the Greatest Ontario Women • Representing women’s issues • Sent as a delegate to the League of Nations in Geneva • Member of the World Disarmament Committee

  7. Was criticized by people who had beliefs about women’s roles • In response: • “if women are exclusively interested in private life and not in a place in the world, then they are not worth of the franchise.” • A women’s place is any place she wants to be
