  2. Types of Verbs There are 3 types of verbs • Action • Helping • Linking

  3. Action Verbs Tells what someone or something (the subject) does Can be physical or mental action Examples: Camree ran around the block to get away from the clown. Austin thought about doing last night’s homework.

  4. Helping Verbs Helping verbs with a main verb form a verb phrase. They HELP the action verb Examples: Madison may decide to apply for that position. Lacie and Grace must make the decision this week.

  6. Linking Verbs Links the subject to another noun or an adjective in the predicate Do not show action but express a state of being

  8. Linking Verbs Examples: Riley is the presiding officer. Aiden and Josiah’s arguments were persuasive. The person responsible for placing orders is Brandon.

  9. Linking Verbs Example: Kolten is late to class everyday. Sara was on the phone with her mom.

  10. Action or Linking? To test if the verb is acting as a linking verb or a helping verb do this quick test: • Find the verb • Replace with is or are. • If the sentence makes sense then the verb is LINKING. • If the sentence does not make sense then the verb is ACTION

  11. Examples The spaghetti tastes good. The spaghetti is good. *The sentence makes sense. Taste is a linking verb. The girl tastes the spaghetti. The girl is the spaghetti. *The sentence does not make sense. Taste is not a linking verb

  12. PRACTICE! Underline the verb. Write an A if it is an action verb. Write an L if it is a linking verb The child appeared tired. Bill became the president of the student council. The cloth on the table felt soft and fuzzy. Jeannie grows taller every day. The tree grows every day. John felt sick after lunch.
