Earth Charter Unit Plans • What are concept maps? • Summary • The teacher constructing concept maps primary goal is helping students understand relationships between facts, not just knowing information. • Constructivism suggests that knowledge or understandings are just existing out there, but an objective reality. They assume that knowledge is actively constructed from within the learner (Hendry & King, 1994).

The learner comes into any new situation with prior knowledge based on past experiences. New knowledge is learned through integration with prior knowledge.
