FORMWORK AND ITS REQUIREMENTS Presented By:Formwork Contractors Sydney
REQUIREMENTS OF A GOOD FORMWORK • 1. StrengthFormwork should be strong enough to hold dead and alive loads. This weight includes the weight of wet concrete, self-weight and the worker’s load. The stability should be there during and after the casting of the concrete. • 2. AdaptabilityGood formwork should be flexibly built and supported to hold the shape of the structure firmly without undue deflection. • 3. RigidityThe joint of the formwork should be interlocked tightly enough to prevent any possible leakage of the wet concrete or cement grout. • 4. WaterproofThe materials used in formwork should be waterproof. This is to avoid the absorption of water from the wet concrete. • 5. SegmentationTheconstructed formwork should be done in segments for easy removal when concrete is set without damaging the structure. • 6. AffordabilityThe formwork materials used should be affordable and readily available. Accessing them should be possible and also suitable for reuse. • 7. AccuracySetting up the formwork should be done with the most accuracy and to the desired line. All levels should have a flat surface. The materials used in formwork should be very light and easily movable for quick erection.
FORMWORK REQUIREMENTS BASED ON FUNCTIONALITY • Formwork materials should be of reasonable size for easy transportation and stored to be reused in another project. • Formwork should be flexible when fitting and interlocking for the construction process of the project to advance smoothly. • Formwork is supposed to be lightweight and at the same time strong enough to handle the different weight loads of the structure. • Formwork should be hygienic to workers and friendly to handle during and after construction.
TYPES OF FORMWORK BASED ON MATERIAL • Timber formwork is fabricated at the construction site using timber. It is easy to use but cannot be used in big structures because it consumes time. • Plywood formwork produces a fine finish on the concrete surface. It is manufactured from wood. • Steel formwork is highly recommended because it has a long life span and can be used several times as compared to timber and plywood. • Aluminum formwork is lighter compared to steel because of its low density. • Plastic formwork uses an interlocking mechanism because of the similar constructing shapes. • Fabric formwork is widely used in complex designs and irregular shapes.
UP TO YOU • Formwork has made it easy for one to construct almost any structure he or she desires, whether it’s a bridge, road or a skyscraper. With the right team and the availability of material, more structures are constructed. This has made life more comfortable and affordable.
