  2. Syllabus • Welcome back! I hope you had a great summer! • Materials: Each student will need……… • Highlighters (composition notebook 12th) • Pens or Pencils • (4x6 index cards) • Flash drive or some other technology saving device!!! • **Note: Computers are randomly wiped. You WILL LOSE YOUR WORK!

  3. English 10 Honors • Welcome back! I hope you had a great summer! • Materials: Each student will need……… • 3 Ring binder and college lined paper • Highlighters • Pens or Pencils • 4x6 index cards • Flash drive or some other technology saving device!!! • **Note: Computers are randomly wiped. You WILL LOSE YOUR WORK!

Course Description: • At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to… • Participate in and report on small group learning activities. • Distinguish between visual and verbal media messages. • Apply knowledge of words to extend vocabulary development. • Read, comprehend and analyze a variety of different texts. • Develop a variety of writing: persuasive, analytical, informational. • Write, revise, and edit writing • Create a research project

  5. Classroom Procedures and Routines ‘Non-negotiables’ a non-negotiable rule a standard rule that must be followed.

  7. R-E-S-P-E-C-T • Myself and Mrs. Stokes have zero tolerance for disrespect. • 1. Warning • 2. Conference • 3. Referral. • Most cases of dis-respect will land you outside of this room with a zero for the day • I DO NOT want to see your cell-phone or IPOD. (This ties in with the statement above.)

  8. Procedures and Routines • Assignments/Announcements • Agenda book = quiz grade. • You are to have it everyday. • Copy assignments/announcements from board to receive 2 points each day. • Teacher will check to issue points. • If you are absent, check with me.

  9. Where do I put my assignment? • Color coded trays are behind my desk. • Purple = 1st period • Green = 2nd period • Yellow = 4th period • Orange = 5th period • Red = 6th period • Blue = 7th period

  10. LATE Assignments • Late work will ONLY be accepted one day late with a possible grade of 70% • NO late work after one day late. • Example: If an assignment is due on Monday you can not turn it in Wednesday. It will be a zero

  11. Make Up Assignments • If you are absent, you must… • Check for the chart in the Make Up Work Folder. • Find your assignment in the folder • Initial that you picked up the assignment and have Miss. Handfordor Mrs. Stokes initial that you picked up the assignment. • You have 5 days from the day of absence to make up the work. I will not accept it past the 5 day mark.

  12. During Class Time… • ALWAYS Raise your hand. • 1 = pencil • 2 = tissue • 3 = bathroom

  13. Bathroom/Locker needs Take care of bathroom/locker needs before class. (4 passes per 9 weeks) How passes work: you will be given 4 passes. The passes will be blank. It is up to you, how you use them: office, bathroom, etc. BUT YOU ONLY GET FOUR! When you decide to use a pass, give it to me or Ms. Stokes and TAKE THE ALL CLASS PASS. If you do not use them all, you may cash them in at the end of the marking period for extra credit. Keep them somewhere safe! There will be NO REPLACEMENTS.

  14. Grading • Grading: every six weeks: • TESTS: 30% • QUIZZES: 30% • DAILY ASSIGNMENTS: 20% • PARTICIPATION: 20% • Each grading period is 45% of your total grade and each semester exam is 10% • Any questions?

  15. Participation • Green tokens: 5 points each • Yellow tokens: 3 points each • 1. You can earn tokens for a variety of good behaviors and practices: being in your seat on time, participating in discussions, leading discussions, displaying model behavior… • Once you receive your tokens, immediately write your name on the back, class period and put them in the “Participation Piggy Bank” at the end of class. • They will counted everyday and added to the grade book. • You can lose points…

  16. Misc. • You MUST HAVE A PASS TO ENTER THE CLASS! IF NOT, YOU WILL GO GET ONE. • COMPLETE YOUR ASSIGNED WORK! • EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES.

  17. A Little bit about Miss Handford • I commute everyday from Richmond City. • Before teaching, I worked in the restaurant business for 13 years. • I am originally from England. • I have an orange tabby called Oscar. He is my baby 

  18. My Pledge to Students • I will trust you until you give me reason to do otherwise. • I will respect you and work with you to solve problems. • I will promptly correct and offer feedback on your work. • I will work with you to meet learning goals. • I will offer extra help and alternative assessments should you require them.

  19. Classroom Expectations • It is my belief that if you play a role in establishing our expectations, then you will be more likely to care about them: • I have given each of you a list of expectations suitable for this room • Select your top three! • Write one-two sentences explaining WHY you selected those rules for our class on the back of the worksheet. • Write your top three on our poster. • I will tally the results and post our classroom expectations tomorrow!
