Accurate Velocity Differences in Merging Galaxies Using RSS Longslit & Brightest Cluster Galaxies Growth

Explore the verification of RSS technique for accurate velocity differences in merging galaxies and study Brightest Cluster Galaxies growth through mergers at z ~ 0.08. SALT verification on nearby SDSS merger reveals ∆V = 2.0 ± 37.0 km/s. S/N in RSS observations lower than predicted by simulator (v3.91). 15 min RSS exposure equals 45 min SDSS exposure. Pilot project awarded time for observing 10 galaxies; 4 galaxies observed, 3 not usable due to poor slit alignment and SALTICAM issues.

The growth of Brightest Cluster Galaxiesthrough mergers. SALT Verification of the technique on nearby SDSS merger. z ~ 0.08 ∆V = 2.0 ± 37.0 km/s SDSS

  2. S/N in RSS observations is factor of ~2 lower than predicted by • RSS simulator (using v3.91). • 15 min exposure on RSS is approx. equivalent to a 45 min SDSS exposure. • Pilot project of 10 galaxies awarded time. • 4 galaxies observed. • - 3 not useable due to poor slit alignment and SALTICAM problems.
