  2. Fordham IT Highlights Oct 2005 – Frank J. Sirianni, Ph.D. – VP for IT / CIO Fall 2005 – FJS asked to develop an IT ‘strategic plan’ Dec 2005 – Board of Trustees approved the University Strategic Plan Toward 2016 Jan  Jun 2006 IT Planning & Improvement Program May 2006 – Fordham IT Strategies Operational Readiness University Resources Organizational Excellence Enterprise Application Integration April 2010 Strategies

  3. The University Strategic Plan ...... drives the Fordham IT Vision ... The Plan presents a vision for the University’s future from today to 2016. The Plan initiatives focus on: • the quality of undergraduate life and learning, • the prominence of the professional schools, • wide ranging communications and community building, • an active projection of mission and identity and • the development of resources including people, places, infrastructure and finances.

  4. Some perspective… Student and Faculty Expectations Reliable, Fast, Secure and Ubiquitous access to systems and information resources is critical to increasing service levels, maintaining Fordham University’s competitive position and realizing and making progress “Toward 2016.”

  5. More perspective… 21st Century Students “Our students have changed radically” this is the observation of Marc Prensky in his article "Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants.“ High expectations from University of choice “Without a consistent IT architecture and infrastructure, and an appropriate IT governance model, modern colleges and universities are simply not able to recruit and retain first-rate scientists and scholars.” “An inadequate IT infrastructure in higher education will result in a decline in the quality of students, faculty and research in the short term and probably extinction in the long run.” -Jack McCredie, Does IT Matter to Higher Education, Educause Review

  6. Our Opportunities… • Renew our mission and vision for IT to align with the university strategic goals • Modernize the IT organization • Brand and market IT internally and externally • Build customer trust in IT by becoming the provider of choice for IT services at Fordham University • Become a fully integrated business partner with other operating units and academic departments

  7. How? Prepare an IT strategic mission and vision that is aligned with the University Strategic Plan – Toward 2016 Create strategic initiatives to implement the vision Identify key projects in support of the initiatives Identify a financial, resource and organizational framework to deliver the supporting projects and maintain the existing University legacy environment Regularly assess how we were doing vs. the vision So, Our Objective was To … …Transform Fordham IT from a traditional operational service model to an enterprise strategic model that will meet University long term needs … ... IT transformation is frequently characterized as a journey not a destination ... We started the journey in the Spring of 2006 … To Create a University Wide IT that is: Flexible, Scalable, Reliable, Recoverable & Secure

  8. Operational Model Maintain existing service levels; service at disruption point Defer investments Fix when broken Decentralized planning and delivery Creates ‘islands of automation’ Strategic Model ... Life-cycle planning Effective information management Early follower Central vs. decentralized – planning, information & ‘power’ Just-in-time purchasing decisions Open, not proprietary systems Buy, don't build, many vendors Re engineer business processes first, ‘custom’ systems second Monitor & control IT initiatives University Wide: Flexible, Scalable, Reliable, Recoverable & Secure Fordham IT Planning Values ...
