  4. George H. Bush: • Tiananmen Square: • Spring 1989 – Hundreds of pro-democracy protesters gather in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square

  5. Tiananmen Square: • June – China’s leaders brutally crush the movement • Tanks run over crowds • Machine gunners kill hundreds of protesters • Arrested demonstrators were publicly executed

  6. Fall of the Soviet Union: • Poland’s Communist Government Falls • Domino Effect: Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, and Romania • December 1989 – Berlin Wall Torn Down • 1991 – Gorbachev’s government fails • Boris Yeltsin Takes Over • End of Cold War

  7. Persian Gulf War: • August 2, 1990 – Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait • After Kuwait’s Oil Reserves • Pay for war bills with Iran • 539,000 American troops, sailors, and pilots rolled across Kuwait • Hussein’s Army Retreats

  8. Persian Gulf War: • Attack launched on Feb 23, 1991 • Failed to meet UN resolutions • February 27th Saddam accepts terms for cease fire • Failed to dislodge Saddam
