  4. Why Soccer… This unit incorporates all of the aspects of physical education, from the curriculum requirements, to the overall healthy growth of the child. This unit promotes physical health as it incorporates the components of fitness such as cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance, and flexibility, as well as speed, balance, agility, and much more. It fosters emotional and social well-being as it incorporates the components of teamwork, such as communication and cooperation, as well as many other valuable life-skills. It also promotes mental health as it is both enjoyable and challenging! Soccer can be inexpensive, given the numerous programs available, and the little equipment needed. It can be played anyone; Age, sex, and ability are not limiting factors! It can be competitive and time-consuming, it can be less competitive and only once a week, or it can be pick-up in your own backyard. Soccer can be modified in many ways in order to accommodate those who are playing, whether it be the rules, the field size, the type of ball, and so on. It can be played indoor or outdoors. Lastly, soccer provides many opportunities for the future, professional or not: player, coach, manager, trainer, sports-writer, equipment manufacturer, sports complex owner and operators, or just a die-hard fan. All of these positions can be formed into anything from prosperous careers or a simple favourite past-time.

  5. The Mystery: Soccer does not rank in top 20 sports!! This is a mystery, after all, soccer has 4 passionate fan bases in the US: 1) immigrants arrived from soccer mad countries (S.America, Africa, Europe, etc.) 2) women under the age of 55 3) kids now participating in community/school programs that have embraced soccer because it is inexpensive, co-educational, for anyone 4) Kids passing through these programs in big numbers for >20 yrs.  Thus, the first cohort is now in its mid twenties and in possession of the disposal income to support a local club and a national league. HOWEVER…Things are looking up!  This is good news. Soccer is a dynamic game. Soccer is all about pattern recognition on the fly. One of the real pleasures of the game is watching patterns form and reform on the field as these two little universes reconfigure themselves in a spectacular display of "sense and respond".

Purpose of Unit: ** Introduce students to the game of soccer (equipment, rules, safety, skills, strategies…) ** Introduce modified games of soccer (concepts, skill development, FUN) ** Meet requirements of curriculum (Physical Activity and Active Living Expectations) ** Meet Needs of Student (Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual, Social)

  9. The Field Indoor: may use walls or lines for out of bounds, and mats or hockey nets for goals

Curriculum Expectations Physical Activity: Active Living: Overall: -participate regularly in a balanced instructional program that includes a wide variety of enjoyable physical activities that encourage lifelong participation -demonstrate safe-practices regarding the safety of themselves and others Specific: A.1-participate regularly in physical activities, choosing a wide range of activities A.2-demonstrate positive, responsible personal and social behaviour in physical activity settings A.3-apply guidelines and procedures related to safe participation in physical activity A.4-demonstrate behaviour that minimizes risk to themselves and others Overall: -demonstrate personal competence in applying movement skills and principles -demonstrate knowledge of guidelines and strategies that enhance participation in recreation and sport activities Specific: P.1 -use/combine movement skills in variety of physical activities P.2 -demonstrate understanding of the importance of movement principles in performing isolated or combined movement skills P.2 -identify appropriate movement principles in learning and refining movement skills P.4 -demonstrate improvement in their skills P.5 -demonstrate understanding of specific rules and guidelines for participation in recreation and sport including team, group, dual, and individual activities P.6 -identify the requirements, including basic equipment standards, preparation, and safety issues that maximize performance and participation in recreation and sport activities P.7 -explain appropriate strategies or tactics that enhance performance in specific situations and conditions

The Overall Plan Skills • Ball Control (Dribbling, Shielding, Turning) • Passing (inside, outside, long, short) • Throw-ins, Heading (technique) • Shooting (technique) • Full Game (implement strategy) Assessment = 25% per category • Knowledge/Understanding: Quiz (concepts, rules), Last Day • Inquiry: Create a warm-up or skill builder • Communication: Present Inquiry to classmates & paper/review of game • Application: Soccer Skill Evaluation Field Trip • Class trip after school on Wednesday to see varsity game – written assignment

Evaluation/Assessment: Diagnostic: Observe students on first day to see where they stand with respect to soccer skills Formative: On-going, participation, following guidelines, skill level Summative: Knowledge/Understanding: (Quiz) Inquiry: (Group Assignment and Presentation) Communication: (Varsity game – written assignment) Application: (Soccer Skills Evaluation)
