  2. What is Curriculum for Excellence? Curriculum for Excellence is the curriculum in Scotland which applies to all children and young people age 3-18. It aims to raise achievement for all, enabling young people to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to succeed in learning, life and work Broad General Education The period from age 3 to the end of S3 (age 3-15), covering all of the experiences and outcomes across all curriculum areas Senior Phase The period from S4 – S6 working towards National Qualifications

Purpose of Curriculum The curriculum aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they will need in life, learning and work, now and in the future. The four capacities are - Successful learners Confident individuals Responsible citizens Effective contributors

New National Qualifications The fresh approach to learning under Curriculum for Excellence requires new assessment methods and qualifications The new National Qualifications that are being developed will have equal status and credibility to those currently available and will support the new curriculum Designed to support Curriculum for Excellence as the new Qualifications build on the experiences and outcomes undertaken in S1 - S3 Ensure that candidates skills and abilities are appropriately assessed and recognised

  6. New National Courses: Design Courses at National 2,3 and 4 will not be graded. They will be assessed as pass or fail Courses at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher will be graded A to D If a learner fails a Course assessment they will receive credit for the Units they have achieved

  7. New National Courses: Assessment Courses are Unit based. Units in all Courses will be flexible to allow teachers to make decisions about unit assessment methods 7 methods of assessment specified appropriate to subject and level: Assignment Case-Study Project Portfolio Practical Activity Performance Test/Question paper

  8. Skills Greater focus on skills development Skills for learning, life and work: Literacy Numeracy Skills for health and well-being Employability, enterprise and citizenship Thinking skills

CfE Qualifications Timeline Session 2012/13 last diet of Standard Grade examinations develop Assessment Support (N2 – N5) Publish Draft and final Advanced Higher documents Session 2013/14 first diet of new CfE Qualifications (N1 to N5), dual run with existing Access and Intermediates develop Assessment Support (Higher) Session 2014/15 first diet of new Higher, dual run with existing Access, Intermediates and Highers develop Assessment Support (Advanced Higher) Session 2015/16 first diet of Advanced Higher
