Recovery Plans *NRA- National Recovery Act *AAA- Agricultural Adjustment Admin. c. Prevention Reforms *FDIC- Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (Have you seen this?) *SEC- Securities and Exchange Commission

Women and African Americans • more opportunities to participate in government • Eleanor Roosevelt set a precedent • Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins—first lady to head an executive department • William Hastie—first black federal judge • Black Cabinet • served as unofficial advisors to the President • still faced challenges and discrimination • New Deal programs paid men higher wages • men resented working women because jobs were scarce • Roosevelt was at the mercy of southern Democrat votes in Congress—could not push too hard for civil rights measures

  7. problems with the new Deal • too friendly to banks and businesses? • changed the relationship between the American people and the government • threatened the balance of power (checks and balances) • gave President toomuch power • some aspects were unconstitutional • U.S. v. Butler: tax to raise money for farmer subsidies unconstitutional?
