  3. Outline • Overview of the hydraulic hybrid • Goals and objectives • Methods and procedures • Milestones and roadblocks • Future Plans • Budget

  4. Overview • Problem: • Fuel Efficiency • Fuel Economy Courtesy of EPA National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions • Vehicle Emissions

  5. Overview Courtesy of Parker.com

  6. Overview Courtesy of HHV system panel

  7. Goals and Objectives • Purpose: • Increase energy recovery by 50% from braking • Increase fuel economy by 20% to 30% thereby reducing emissions • Provide inexpensive solution for developing infrastructures and highly polluted areas

  8. Brainstorming Methods & Procedures • Scope Document • Gant Chart/Timeline • System Flowcharts

  9. Timeline Methods & Procedures • Fall Semester • Test individual modules • Wrap all modules in automated supervisory controller • Spring Semester • Begin modeling new torque split hybrid system • Have new torque split controller automated and ready by E-Days

  10. Flowcharts Methods & Procedures

  11. Design Methods & Procedures • Constraints & Criteria • The control system must not interfere with the normal safety of the vehicle • The controller must be compatible to any vehicle • The automation of the control system should not drastically change the operation of the vehicle

  12. Design Methods & Procedures • The system: • Displacement pump stores and releases hydraulic energy • The transfer case allows us to switch between hydraulic and non-hydraulic mode

  13. Design Methods & Procedures • User Control of the system: • The throttle pedal determines what mode the hybrid system is in: charging or discharging.

  14. Implementation Methods & Procedures • Download Simulink code to truck • Control the truck with manual switches • Gather data from MotoTune and Serial Data Link

  15. Milestones & Roadblocks • Rewired truck inputs to engine control unit • Achieved serial communication • Implemented bang-bang control switches • Able to track and control displacement pump • Semi-automated control of vehicle

  16. Switch Bang-Bang Subsystem Milestones & Roadblocks • 2 Input Switches • 3 Digital Actuators

  17. Displacement Controller Milestones & Roadblocks

  18. Serial Communication Milestones & Roadblocks • J -1708 Protocal • Data Structure • PID – Identifier • Data • Bit Resolution

  19. Future Plans • Complete Automation of Parallel Truck Configuration • Optimize Automation Controller for Fuel Economy = + (It’s a smart Truck)

  20. Future Plans Serial Communication • Current Design • Parallel System • Redesign controller: • Torque Split Transmission • Increase Control Complexity • Throttle control regeneration

  21. Budget Summary: • Initial funding from Czero of $50k • In 2008, Czero received another $25k from the Fort Collins Governor to continue the hydraulic hybrid project • MotoTron donated ECU controllers for the truck • Kept accurate records of our purchases and donations
