Junior Family Night Goals • Identify the challenges seniors face balancing the senior year • Understand the post-secondary planning process • Identify the college search and application process • Assist families in becoming an informed support system • Provide resources for students and families

  4. Timeline for Juniors • Meet with your counselor to confirm senior course selection • Register for SAT/ACT • Register with NCAA • Research and consider college options • Visit College campuses • Investigate scholarship opportunities • Research options after High School Graduation

DCPS Graduation Requirements • 4 units English • 4 units Math (includes Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2) • 4 units Science (includes 3 lab sciences) • 4 units Social Studies (includes World History 1&2, US History, DC History, US Government • 2 units World Languages • 2 units Career/Technology (CTE) OR College Level Course (AP) • 1.5 units Health & Physical Education • .5 unit Art • .5 unit Music • 1.5 units Electives

College and Career PlanningMaking a College List • REACH Schools- these schools possess many of the features the scholar desires but admissions is very competitive • REALISTIC SCHOOLS- schools that possess the significant features a scholar desires and the probability of admission is slightly better then even • SAFETY SCHOOLS- schools that possess the majority of the features a scholar desires and the probability of admission is highly likely

Understanding College Terminology • Regular admission- Applications are submitted by midwinter deadline. • Rolling Admission- Continuous applications submitted without a deadline date • Early Application- 2 types of early plans-one is binding and the other is nonbinding • Early Decision- Binding commitment is essential to college selection • Early Action- Nonbinding plan requiring submission in early fall

  11. College and Career Planning Campus Visits • Tour the campus • Attend an information session • Schedule an interview if possible • Attend a class • Talk with faculty and students about special interests • Ask questions about DORM LIFE and Internships • Pick up a copy of campus newspaper
