CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS FOR A SOUTH CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA Subject Units Required English/Language Arts 4.0 Mathematics 4.0 Science 3.0 US History & Constitution 1.0 Economics .5 US Government .5 Other Social Studies 1.0 Physical Education or JROTC 1.0 Computer Science 1.0 Foreign Language* OR 1.0 Career and Technical Education** Electives 7.0 TOTAL 24.0 For a student in a college prep program to meet the state high school diploma requirements, he must earn oneunit must in a foreign language (most four year colleges/universities require at least two units of the same foreign language). ** Astudent in a Tech Prep Program must earn one unit in occupational education.

The valedictorian and salutatorian of each senior class will be recognized during the graduation ceremony. Honor graduates will be recognized at graduation ceremonies, in alphabetical order by the category, as follows: BOARD OF TRUSTEES SCHOLARS 4.5 OR HIGHER DOUBLE CORD GRADUATES 4.0000 TO 4.4999 SINGLE CORD GRADUATES 3.0000 TO 3.9999

College Preparatory Course Prerequisite Requirements Effective Academic Year 2011-12 for Entering College Freshmen •4 units of English •4 units of Math: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and either Pre-Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Statistics AP, or Calculus AP. If you took Algebra 1 part A and B, then you must take Geometry, Algebra 2, and a math higher than Algebra 2. •3 units of lab sciences: TWO units MUST be taken in different fields. Same fields include: Biology 1 and 2 and Anatomy. Physical Science is NOT a lab science, but it DOES count for high school. •3 units of Social Sciences: MUST include 1 unit of US History, ½ unit of Economics, and ½ unit of American Government. The third social science can be: World Geography, World History, European History AP, and ½ unit courses such as psychology, sociology, street law, current events, Psychology AP. •2 units of the same foreign language: Check with the college of your choice to find out if they require three units. •1 unit of PE or ROTC •1 unit of Fine Arts •1 unit of elective: a computer class beyond basic keyboarding is STRONGLY recommended, but an additional unit in any of the above courses will count. Check with your college of choice for the final determination for this requirement!!! Colleges will vary in what they will accept.

South Carolina Scholarship and Grants Program Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Eligibility: •Minimum of 3.5 GPA on the SCUGS •Minimum score of 1200 SAT (Critical Reading and Math) OR 27 ACT (Composite) •Ranked in the top 6% of class OR •Minimum of 4.0 GPA on the SCUGS •Minimum of 1400 SAT (Critical Reading and Math) OR 32 ACT (Composite) •Rank is waived Award Amount: Up to $6,700 toward the cost of attendance at an eligible 4-year college Renewal Criteria: Minimum of 3.0 GPA and 30 credit hours for each academic year Term Limit: Scholarship is good for 8 consecutive terms (4 years) toward first bachelor’s degree. APPLICATIONS ARE REQUIRED DURING YOUR SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL. YOU WILL BE CONTACTED BY GUIDANCE IF YOU MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS.

South Carolina Scholarship and Grants Program Life Scholarship Eligibility You must meet 2 of the 3 following criteria if attending a 4-year college: • Minimum of 3.0 GPA on the SCUGS • Minimum of 1100 SAT (Critical Reading and Math) OR • 24 ACT (Composite) • Ranked in the top 30% of graduating class : If you are planning to attend a 2-yearcollege • Minimum 3.0 GPA on the SCUGS •Test scores (while still required for attendance) and rank are waived Award Amount •up to $5,000 toward the cost of attendance at an eligible 4 year college OR •up to the cost of tuition at a 2 year college PLUS a $300 book allowance Renewal Criteria: •Minimum of 3.0 LIFE GPA and 30 credit hours for each academic year Term Limit: scholarship is good for 8 consecutive terms (4 years) toward first bachelor’s degree at a 4-year college OR 2 consecutive terms (1 year) for a certificate or diploma program at a 2-year college OR 4 consecutive terms (2 years) for an associate’s degree at a 2-year college THE COLLEGE THAT YOU CHOOSE TO ATTEND WILL LET YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE BEEN AWARDED THE LIFE SCHOLARSHIP.

Scholarship EnhancementsPalmetto Fellows and LIFE Scholarships ONLY Eligible the Sophomore Year of college •You MUST declare a major in the FRESHMAN YEAR •Majors eligible for enhancements are: Math and Science fields •You MUST complete 14 credit hours within the math and science fields during your FRESHMAN year of college. Hours can be combined within the fields. •Enhancement monies may be awarded up to 6 consecutive terms •LIFE Scholarship maximum award is $7500, which cannot exceed cost of attendance •Palmetto Fellows Scholarship maximum is $10,000, which cannot exceed cost of attendance For further information, please go to the South Carolina Commission of High Education www.che.sc.gov

South Carolina Scholarship and Grants ProgramSC Hope Scholarship SC Hope Scholarship Eligibility: • Minimum of 3.0 GPA on the SCUGS • No minimum test score or rank required Award Amount: • $2,650 (includes $150 book allowance) toward the cost of attendance at an eligible 4-year college Renewal Criteria: • Is only good for the FRESHMAN year. • In order to receive the LIFE scholarship in the sophomore year, you must earn at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and 30 credit hours. Term Limit: •2 consecutive terms (1 year) toward a bachelor’s degree THE COLLEGE YOU CHOOSE TO ATTEND WILL LET YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE BEEN AWARDED THE HOPE SCHOLARSHIP.

South Carolina Scholarship and Grants Program SC Needs-Based Grant Eligibility: • No minimum GPA • Must fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Award Amount: • Up to $2,500 for a full time student toward the cost of attendance at an eligible 2 or 4 year college • Up to $1,250 for a part time student toward the cost of attendance at an eligible 2 or 4 year college Renewal Criteria: • Fill out the FAFSA every year. • Minimum of 2.0 cumulative GPA and 24 credit hours each academic year for a full time student and 12 credit hours for a part time student Term Limit: •8 full time terms or its equivalent

SC Tuition Grants Program NEED-BASED GRANTS AWARDED TO QUALIFIED SOUTH CAROLINA RESIDENTS WHO ATTEND ELIGIBLE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT COLLEGES Must apply annually by submitting the “free application for federal student aid” (FAFSA), available on the internet at www.FAFSA.Ed.Gov The FAFSA will determine your eligibility ANNUAL APPLICATION RECEIPT DEADLINE OF JUNE 30 This is a FIRM deadline!!! Notification of awards by e-mail to all applicants listing valid e-mail addresses on their FAFSA. Grants available for full-time, undergraduate students only who are working on first 4 year degree Freshmen must graduate in top 75% of high school class or score at least 900 on sat or at least 19 on act or graduate from high school with at least a 2.0 GPA on the SCUGS Upperclassmen must pass a minimum of 24 credit hours annually and meet the college’s federal satisfactory academic progress requirements

  13. Teaching Fellowship by CERRADo you want to become a teacher? Criteria • A desire to teach in South Carolina • A high school senior • Exhibit high academic achievement • Have a history of school and community service Only 175 seniors will qualify for the scholarship. Students will receive up to $6000 a year for four years, which includes up to $5700 for tuition and board and up to $300 for summer enrichment programs. A Teaching Fellows recipient agrees to teach in SC public school one year for every year they receive the Fellowship. High School Dual Credit Procedures Apply online in the General Studies Certificate Program (GSC) as a high school student via the FDTC Website at www.fdtc.edu Contact your high school counselor for a copy of your transcript. You must have a 3.0 GPA to take classes. A copy of your SAT/ACT scores A letter of permission from the counselor and principal. You and your parent(s) need to make an appointment with Nick Lyerly at 661-8103 to schedule course(s) Bring a copy of course(s) or your receipt to Mrs. Plowdenand she will schedule accordingly

  18. College/Scholarship Application Process 1. The student obtains application forms from colleges of his/her choice or applies online. 2. The student completes the information requested on the application form. 3. The student takes the completed application to Mrs. Whitehead and signs log. Incomplete applications will be returned to the student; the application process may be delayed. 4. The Guidance staff generates the official student transcript*. The counselor reviews the application for completeness and correctness. The counselor then signs the transcript, completes the counselor portion of the application, and generates a letter of recommendation (if required). The counselor organizes the application materials and returns the packet to Mrs. Whitehead. Mrs. Whitehead will contact the student so that the student can pickup the completed application and sign the log. The student will be notified of the college’s decision. The student informs the counselor of acceptance or rejection as soon as the information is received. The student is asked to submit a copy of his/her acceptance letter to the Guidance Office. The student informs the colleges of his/her decision to accept or decline their offer of admission. * The official student transcript includes: High School Record (Grades from Grades 9 through 11), 12th grade course schedule, high school profile Students are advised to make copies of all application materials prior to submitting them to the Guidance Office. The Guidance Office does not make copies for the file. Students will be billed for all additional postage charges.
  19. SAT/ACT/College Fee Waivers Eligibility: Free/Reduced Lunch Amount Students are eligible to receive: 2 SAT waivers 2 ACT waivers 4 college waivers Students can see Mrs. Whitehead or Mrs. Dunkin to receive waivers in the guidance department
  20. Senior Reminders Make sure your applications are complete. Admission decisions can be delayed for incomplete applications. SAT/ACT scores must be sent directly from the testing agencies to your colleges of choice. Look for scholarship and grant opportunities. Check out the internet for options. Do you have a FASTWEB account? (www.fastweb.com) Complete your FAFSA in January 2012. File your taxes early in 2012. Taxes must be completed before the FAFSA can be filed. Request your PIN number prior to completing the FAFSA. Visit the colleges. Call the admissions office to schedule a visit. Attend the Open House dates that are offered. If you miss school for a college visit, it is still counted as an UNEXCUSED absence.
