  9. Chapter 2:1-13; The APOSTLES FILLED with the HOLY SPIRIT SPEAK in other LANGUAGES

  10. Jesus had chosen twelve apostles to represent Him and His New Covenant on earth. • One of them, Judas Iscariot had betrayed him and committed suicide. • Jesus had continued appearing to the remaining apostles and teaching them for forty days after His resurrection. • Then He ascended to heaven.

  11. The Promised Power • Ten days before this Pentecost Day, on the day He ascended, He had commanded His apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the “Power from on High,” or the baptism with the Holy Spirit. • They needed this power so they could perform the miraculous signs that confirmed the oral message and so they could lay their hands on others and give them the miraculous power also (Acts 6:6-8; 8:8-19).

  12. A Gap in the Chronology • When the 120 met with the apostles in the upper room to appoint a twelfth apostle to take Judas’ place, it was on one of the ten days between the ascension and the Day of Pentecost. • Now it is on a later day, on the Pentecost Day, that the apostles were all together in one place and the Holy Spirit comes upon them. The text does not identify the place.

  13. Acts 2:1-4 • 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

  14. Discussion Question: • What was Pentecost (Vs 2:1)?

  15. Chapter 2:1; PENTECOST also called feast of Weeks or feast of Harvest One of Three feasts everyone present Exodus 23:14-17, Deuteronomy 16:16; • Passover Leviticus 23:5-6; • PentecostLeviticus 23:15-17; • Tabernacles Leviticus 23:34;

  16. The name “Pentecost,” was from the Greek language and it means “Fiftieth.” It was the fiftieth day after the Passover.Leviticus 23:15-16;. The Jews had called it the “Feast of Weeks,” “Harvest Festival” and the “Festival of the First Fruits.” It began on the Sunday the 1st day after the Sabbath which is a Saturday or 7th day, 7 weeks or 49 days after the Passover

  17. Scripture • Leviticus 23:16 “Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the LORD” • Numbers 28:26 “`On the day of firstfruits, when you present to the LORD an offering of new grain during the Feast of Weeks, hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.”

  18. The First Fruits • The Jews who accepted the gospel on this great day became the first fruits to God of His new Creation. • I’m sure this was another reason that this particular day was chosen by Jesus as the best day for His Kingdom to come. • The Jews were the first fruits of all Christians. But there is a sense in which all Christians are the first fruits to God of Mankind (James 1:18).

  19. Jews from all over the world would be gathered in Jerusalem and God CHOSE this day to speak about the victory of His Son Jesus and bring the church into being. • As the day when the preaching of the gospel reaped a great harvest of souls from among the Jews who were there that day, it was an appropriate time.

  20. Chapter 2:1; There are a number of things identified in the New Testament with the Sunday or 1st day Mark 16:9; Christ’s resurrection Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Christians gather together to worship God, share in the Lords supper and give of their means.

  21. Chapter 2:1; There are a number of things identified in the New Testament with the Sunday or 1st day Revelation 1:6-9; John received his vision of the revelation on the 1st day of the week - the Lords Day

  22. Chapter 2:1; PENTECOST When the day was FULLY come

  23. In verse 15 the NIVsays 9:00 in the morning. The KJV says the third hour. The Jews measured time from daylight (i.e. 6:00 AM) and thus the third hour after 6:00 AM was 9:00.

  24. 2:1; They the Apostleswith one accord in one place • No one except the apostles was promised the baptism with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:1-5). • If we look carefully at the text we will see that the pronoun “they” in chapter 2. verse 1 refers to the noun “apostles” in the last sentence of the first chapter. • It was the apostles, then, who were all together in one place when the Holy Spirit came upon them.

  25. 2:1; WAS IT ONLY THE TWELVE? • The Promise is for the Twelve (Matthew 26:20; Mark 14:17; Luke 22:14) • The Commission is for the Twelve (Matthew 28:16) • The Orders are for the Twelve (Acts 1:2) • Those speaking are Galilean (Acts 2:7) • The Stand is by the Twelve (Acts 2:14)

  26. 2:1; WAS IT ONLY THE TWELVE? • The Wonders and Signs are by the Twelve (Acts 2:43, 4:33; 5:12; 2 Corinthians 12:12) • The Persecution belongs to the Twelve (Acts 5:18, 29, 40) • The Ordination belongs to the Twelve (Acts 6:6)

  27. 2v2; A SOUNDlikethe sound of a mighty wind NOT a wind but a sound likea mighty wind • With the coming of the Holy Spirit came a sound like the blowing of a mighty wind. • It was not actually a wind that made the sound. It was what we would today call a sound effect. But it got the attention of the crowds. They ran to the location where the sound seemed to be coming from. • There they saw the twelve apostles, who had been sitting and were now standing together.

  28. The Sight like fireNOT a FIRE but LIKE a fire • What the crowd saw when they ran to the place where the twelve apostles were standing was something that looked like flames coming from the top of the head, and possibly the shoulders, of each of the twelve apostles. God had used a similar sign to get Moses’ attention at Horeb almost two thousand years before.

  29. 2v4; When this happened They the Apostles were FILLED with MIRACULOUS POWER and began to SPEAK in otherLANGUAGES as the Holy Spiritenabled them

  30. 2:3-4; MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT • AUDIBLE. Sounded like a violent wind • VISIBLE. What looked like fire descended, divided, and designated. • INTERNAL. Inspiration and Courage • EXTERNAL. Speaking in languages they had not learned.

  31. 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised JOHN 14:16-17 "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you.

  32. 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised Acts 1:2-4; Luke 24:49; that the Apostleswould receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit Acts 1:8; the Apostles would receive POWER when the Holy Spirit came upon them and THEY would be Christ’s witnesses

  33. 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised Acts 2:7; Those that spoke were GALILLEANS in 1:11 the Apostles are described as the men of Galilee Acts 2:14; Peter stood up with the other Apostles and preached

  34. 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised Acts 2:37; Those who HEARD asked Peter the other Apostles what they must do about their sinful condition. Acts 2:42; Those who had responded to the preaching the first converts CONTINUED in the APOSTLES TEACHING

  35. 2v4; This fulfilled what Jesus had promised Acts 2:43; Many wonders and signs were done through the Apostles. Acts 3:6-7; The lame man was healed miraculously by the APOSTLE Peter

  36. 2v4; Acts 4:33; The Apostles gave WITNESS to resurrection of Jesus with GREAT POWER Acts 5:12; Through the hands of the APOSTLES many SIGNS and WONDERSwere done

  37. 2v4; When you consider the context of all these passages They seem to overwhelmingly indicate that in this case it was the Apostles who werebaptisedwith theHoly Spirit

  38. 2v4; Because it seems to be a problem question for some as to who ought to be baptisedwith the Holy Spirit. Let us remember some other thoughts about this at this time

  39. 2v4;Some thoughts on baptismwith or in theHoly Spirit? It was aPROMISE NOTaCOMMAND Luke 24:49; Acts 1:5-8; 2:33; It wasADMINSTEREDor GIVEN only byCHRISTnot man Matthew 3:11; Acts 2:22-33;

  40. 2v4; Some thoughts on baptismwith or in theHoly Spirit? ThePURPOSEwasNOTto giveFORGIVENESS OF SINS ThePURPOSEwas ToEMPOWERtheApostlesin thework ofREVEALING and CONFIRMINGthe WORD of God John 16:13; Acts 1:8; 2:4;

  41. 2v4; Some thoughts on baptismwith or in theHoly Spirit? It happened ONLYONCE to the twelve Apostles When the SPIRIT was POURED OUT the SPIRIT came with POWER at PENTECOST Acts Ch 2:1-4;

  42. 2v4; Some thoughts on baptismwith or in the Holy Spirit? The PROMISE was described in LIMITED terms to the Apostles of Christ Acts 1:2,3,4,26; 2:1-4;

  43. The Holy Spirit being POURED out on the Apostles –called the “BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT” Jesus had to go before the Spirit could come into the worldin this special way. Imagine an empty swimming pool with 12 men standing in the deep end and suddenly a cascade of water, like a waterfall pours into the pool and the apostles are standing under the cascade

  44. From that time on the HOLY SPIRIT like a river of water has been made available to every Christian. When you are obedient to Christ it is like jumping in the swimming pool to receive the HOLY SPIRIT who was poured out on the Apostles. The Holy Spirit does NOT need to be POURED OUT again and again

  45. The Holy Spirit POURS out of the Lorry and the Apostles take it to the salvation shop to make it available to others SALVAT ION SHOP Please REMEMBER the HOLY SPIRIT is a PERSON NOT a THING Special delivery! HOLYSPIRIT

  46. From that time till now people can listen to the Apostles teaching and in obedience to what is taught can receive forgiveness and the Holy Spirit will come and dwell in them as Peter said in Acts 2:38; SALVATION SHOP Sinner who repents Apostles teaching

  47. 2v4; CONTRAST Baptism of theHoly Spirit? Gift of POWER Water Baptism

  48. 2v4; CONTRAST Baptism of theHoly Spirit? It happened ONLY ONCE POUREDOUTON PENTECOST

  49. 2v4; CONTRAST Gift of POWER The Powerwas for the apostles and for whom the Spirit wills Mark 9:1; Acts 6: Acts 10:1-10; 1Corinthians 12:1; 2 Corinthians 12:1-5;
