  1. Introduction to Cartography --- Geog. 310 Energy -- Present and Future Dr. F. Kessler 12 March 2014

  2. Ort Library Resources Ort Library home page www.frostburg.edu/lewis-ort-library OneSearch – for tutorial http://libguides.frostburg.edu/OneSearch Catalog USMAI -- for direct access http://catalog.umd.edu Databases A – Z -- for direct access http://researchport.umd.edu Libguide for Geography http://libguides.frostburg.edu/geog Google Advanced Search --- http://www.google.com/advanced_search Libref http://www.frostburg.edu/lewis-ort-library/asklib/ Maryland AskUsNow www.askusnow.info

  3. Library Catalog • InterLibrary Loan (ILL) provides students, faculty and staff with materials that the Ort Library as well as the USMIA (University System of Maryland) does not own. ILL can obtain many materials, including books, periodical articles, dissertations, microforms, government documents, technical reports, films, and more. Audio materials are not available through this service. Please go to http://www.frostburg.edu/lewis-ort-library/aboutlib/depts/loan/ for more information. • Patron Placed Holds can be used for book requests for books within the University System of Maryland. If you search catalogUSMAI and a book title appears that is only available at another campus, select the "request" icon and follow directions. Allow 5-7 days.

  4. Energy Resources Potential terms to use: Biomass (Biofuels) Nuclear Geothermal Solar Hydropower Wind Marine/Ocean Other ? Remember to add data and/or statistics with your search terms. Using these terms there are a few titles that can be located at FSU and other libraries in the system.

  5. Research Tips • Take time to develop a search “strategy” before you start. • Look for additional subject terms or descriptors in the materials you find, refining your “strategy” or focus of your research. • Try different databases/indexes. You may get a different perspective on your topic. • Ask a reference librarian for help. • Use Zoterahttp://www.zotero.org/ a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources. • For Ebscohost databases use the icons for Sign In and Folders to collect, organize, and share your research • Citation linker http://lgdata.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/docs/1174/1017517/Citation_Linker.pdf

  6. General Resources --- U.S. U.S. Energy Information Administration Independent Statistics & Analysis includes reports and publications as well as data tools and models. Information for international energy statistics can also be found here. http://www.eia.gov/ USGS Energy Resources Program provides overview as well as specific information, data, and maps. http://energy.usgs.gov

  7. General Resources ---World WorldBank includes energy and mining. Use the databank with pull down menu for data. http://data.worldbank.org/topic/energy-and-mining BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2013 provides comprehensive, high-quality objective and globally consistent data on world energy markets http://www.bp.com/en/global/corporate/about-bp/energy-economics/statistical-review-of-world-energy-2013.html Energy Resources from the World Energy Council http://www.worldenergy.org/data/resources

  8. Renewable Energy European Commission Eurostat Renewable energy statistics provides recent statistics on renewable energy sources in the European Union (EU). Renewable energy sources include wind power, solar power (thermal, photovoltaic and concentrated), hydroelectric power, tidal power, geothermal energy and biomass. http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/statistics_explained/index.php/Renewable_energy_statistics

  9. Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Energy.gov Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy http://www1.eere.energy.gov/bioenergy/ View the October 2013 report “Offshore Wind Market and Economic Analysis: Annual Market Assessment” for data on renewable energy resources at http://www1.eere.energy.gov/wind/pdfs/offshore_wind_market_and_economic_analysis.pdf

  10. Wind Energy National Wind Turbine Map and database. Click on area within map for statistics on that location. http://eerscmap.usgs.gov/windfarm/ Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) produces graphs showing the exciting growth of the wind power industry around the world. http://www.gwec.net/global-figures/graphs/

  11. Solar Energy PVWatts viewer shows map of U.S. with solar grids. Click on an area and the data for that specific grid. The map provides a visual overview of solar energy grids. http://gisatnrel.nrel.gov/PVWatts_Viewer/index.html NASA --- Atmospheric Science Data Center , Surface meteorology and Solar Energy https://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/sse/ provides relevant weather to reference for solar efficiency using latitude and longitude. There are also Related Web Sites for further information.

  12. Geothermal Energy Due to its location on the Pacific's "ring of fire" and because of tectonic plate conjunctions, California has the largest geothermal generating capacity in the United States. For power plants, energy use, maps, types of power plants, and other information, See the California government Energy Almanac at http://www.energyalmanac.ca.gov/renewables/geothermal/

  13. Ocean/Marine Energy The oceans can produce two types of energy: thermal energy from the sun's heat, and mechanical energy from the tides and waves. BOEM – Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. Use administrative boundaries to delineate political entities http://www.boem.gov/Oil-and-Gas-Energy-Program/Mapping-and-Data/Administrative-Boundaries/Index.aspx Additional data sources for offshore data http://www.boem.gov/Oil-and-Gas-Energy-Program/Mapping-and-Data/Additional-Data-Sources.aspx

  14. Nuclear Power http://www.iaea.org

  15. Nuclear -- Uranium Find statistics on nuclear operable units, nuclear electricity net generation, nuclear share of electricity net generation, and capacity factor using http://www.eia.gov/nuclear/data.cfm On the far right are more categories to view such as U.S. Uraniam Reserves estimates; Summary production statistics, Quarterly production. You can go directly to this information via http://www.eia.gov/nuclear/data.cfm#biomass

  16. Hydropower Open EI Summary World Hydropower Data (from World on the Edge) This dataset presents summary information related to world hydropower. It is part of a supporting dataset for the book World On the Edge: How to Prevent Environmental and Economic Collapse by Lester R. Brown, available from the Earth Policy Institute. http://en.openei.org/datasets/node/462 Note the source is a book. The data may or may not be viable. .

  17. Hydropower A review the Earth Policy Institute data center at http://www.earth-policy.org/data_center/ may provide more data on a large number of topics related to energy throughout the world. Scroll down the list and for Hydroelectric Generation in China, 1965 -2011. Click on the XLS to retrieve data on hydroelectric power in China. (Source: BP, Statistical Review of World Energy, June 2012, London: 2012).

  18. Sustainability Index World Energy Council ConceilMondial de l’energyhttp://www.worldenergy.org/data/sustainability-index using the following: • Energy security: the effective management of primary energy supply from domestic and external sources, the reliability of energy infrastructure, and the ability of participating energy companies to meet current and future demand. • Energy equity: the accessibility and affordability of energy supply across the population. • Environmental sustainability: the achievement of supply and demand-side energy efficiencies and the development of energy supply from renewable and other low-carbon sources. Please note the ranking of the United States in the area of “environmental sustainability.”
