  6. England after the execution of Charles I • The English republic now called the Commonwealth of England • How? Rump Parliament voted to abolish the monarchy in 1649. • Rump Parliament led by Oliver Cromwell and supported by the Roundhead army.

  7. Rump Parliament • Tried to change English society, this included: • Adultery Act of May 1650: death penalty for incest and adultery. • Blasphemy Act of August 1650: restrain extreme religious groups. • Puritans freedom of worship.

  8. Lord Protector • In 1653, Rump Parliament refused to hold elections b/c people feared they would lose their seats. • Cromwell lost patience  dissolved Parliament  army made him the Lord Protector (military dictator)

  9. Restoration of the Monarchy • After death of Cromwell  parliament recalled  election held  new parliament invite King Charles II to return and become King. • Most people excited to have the monarchy back because of the strict blue laws.

  10. Charles II • Parliament insisted he rule as a constitutional monarch  he refused. • He influenced Parliament through blackmail and bribes. • Political Parties: Tories (Royal supporters) vs. Whigs (opponents)
