  • Declaration of the divinity of the Holy Spirit, rejection of Appollinaris and Marcellius' doctrines, and completion of the Nicene Creed

  • Confirmation of the Theotokos, rejection of Nestorius' doctrines, and creation of the Introduction to the Nicene Creed, presided by Pope Cyril of Alexandria
  • 451 AD
  • The Church argues over the nature of Christ, & Pope Dioscorus rejects the Anteochean doctrine of dyophisis held by the Pope of Rome, and supports Eutychus and the Alexandrian doctrine of miaphysis.

  • Roman Pope Leo IX demands Constantinople Patriarch Michael Cerularius to recognize the Church of Rome as the only head and mother church. Patriarch Cerularius refuses, and the two leaders excommunicate each other.
