  1. Fun with Geometry and Measurement Tiffany Padgett Saunders Middle School Multimedia Project

  2. Virginia Standards of Learning • 8.8 The student will investigate and solve problems involving volume and surface area of cones and pyramids, using concrete materials and practical situations. • 8.10 The student will describe, classify, and construct plane figures and solid figures, including prisms, pyramids, cylinders, and cones. • 7.9 The student will investigate and solve problems involving the volume and surface area of a rectangular prisms and cylinders, using concrete materials and practical situations to develop formulas.

  3. Purpose The purpose of the presentation is to provide middle school students with an interactive way to learn how to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

  4. SQUARE A parallelogram with all sides congruent and all angles congruent. Area= length · width WIDTH LENGTH

  5. Rectangle A parallelogram with all angles congruent. Area= length · width WIDTH LENGTH

  6. Parallelogram A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. Area= Base · Height HEIGHT BASE

  7. Triangle A polygon* having three sides. Area= 1/2 base · height HEIGHT BASE *Polygon: a simple closed figure in a plane formed by three or more line segments.

  8. Trapezoid A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel lines. Area= 1/2 · height (a + b) B HEIGHT A

  9. Circle The set of all points in a plane that are the same distance from a given point called the center. Area= πr2 RADIUS

  10. Rectangular Prism A prism with rectangles as bases. Surface Area= 2lw + 2wh + 2lh Volume= length · width · height height width length

  11. Triangular Prism A prism with triangle bases. Surface Area= 2(1/2 base · height)* + (bottom)side +(front)side + (back)side Volume= 1/2 · base · height · length *Multiply by two because you have two triangles

  12. Cylinder A shape in space that has two parallel and congruent circular bases. Surface Area= πr2 + 2πrh Volume= πr2h Radius height

  13. Cones A shape in space that has a circular base and one vertex Surface Area= πr2 + πrs Volume= 1/3 πr2h Side radius

  14. Pyramid A figure in space with three or more triangular faces and a base in the shape of a polygon. Surface Area= Length • Width + 4*(1/2 bh) Volume=1/3 • L• W • H *multiply by 4 because you have 4 triangular faces. height Width Base/Length

  15. Now Let's Try Some Practice Problems !!!

  16. Directions To hear the directions, click the sound button. • On a separate piece of paper, work out problems 1-5. • If you forget the formulas, click on the button with an “I” in the middle and it will give you the list of formulas. • Once finished, click on the button with the “A” in the center for the correct answer. • Click on any part of the screen to go to the next problem.
