  3. Career Description What is a Graphic Designer? Personality traits Mature Creative, open to ideas • A graphic designer creates art for logos, companies, public messages and other things for clients using mainly computers to create rough ideas that are eventually worked into a final version to be sold for the client’s use. Skills • Work well with artistry and design, computers, etc. • Interpret ideas

Main Duties of Career • Consult with clients to establish the overall look, graphic elements and content of communications materials in order to meet their needs • Develop the graphic elements that meet the clients' objectives • Prepare sketches, layouts and graphic elements of the subjects to be rendered using traditional tools, multimedia software and image processing, layout and design software • Co-ordinate sub-contracting • Supervise other graphic designers or graphic arts technicians.

Secondary Education • Courses I would take after high school include: • Design and Applied Arts – work on graphic design, visual communications, etc. • Fine Arts and Art Studies - General art studies, painting, drawing, management • Graphic Communications – printing management, communication, etc. • Computer Software and Media Applications - computer graphics, etc. • Public Relations, Advertising and Applied Communication – public relations, image management, advertising, etc. • I can take these courses at UNB or I can also get special training from The Centre for Arts and Technology in Fredericton, NB. • The courses would cost, at the most, 27 410$.

Salary and Working Conditions • Salary: The average yearly salary for a graphic designer in the Fredericton area is 27,410$. • Employer: Various, Valley Graphics, etc. • Hours: Graphic designers work about 40-44 hours a week. • Hazards/Risks: There are no real risks behind being a graphic designer.

  8. Interview Questions • 1. How many clients do you meet with on average per week? • 2. Does being a graphic designer get you any “pop culture” attention? • 3. What type of client do you deal with the most? i.e.: TV show, radio stations, non-profit organisations, etc.

  9. Reflection • I would love to be a graphic design artist because I really enjoy art, and I like to make people happy through synergy, and working together with clients to create their company’s face and be able to create one of the most stand-out pieces of an organisation for people who would like it.
