Terms • Western Front: • key area of fighting (theatre of war) in Western Europe where Germans dug and defended trenches to avoid losing territory already gained in France; the British and French, unable to break through, began to build their own. • stalemate: dead-lock, neither side can defeat other took place on western front in France for 4 years

  4. poison gas: • gas first used by Germans and then the Allies to blind, choke victims, and or burn • potentially deadly • uncertain weapon due to wind shifts

  5. trench warfare: • used on the frontline and communication routes • often constructed in a zig-zag pattern to avoid direct fire

  6. zeppelin: • large gas-filled balloons with machine guns • used to bomb English coast • easy to shoot out of sky

  7. u-boats: • German submarines used to sink ships carrying supplies to Britain
