On January 5, 2011, Governor Chris Christie signed into law P.L. 2010, Chapter 122, known as the Anti-bullying Bill of Rights. The law includes new requirements for school districts, charter schools, the New Jersey Department of Education, other state agencies, professional associations and institution of higher education. The law became effective on September 1, 2011.
Definition of Bullying Harassment, intimidation or bullying" means … any gesture, any written, verbal or physical act, or any electronic communication, whether it be a single incident or a series of incidents, that is reasonably perceived as being motivated either by any actual or perceived characteristic, such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or a mental, physical or sensory [handicap] disability, or by any other distinguishing characteristic… that substantially disrupts or interferes with the orderly operation of the school or the rights of other students…
We strongly believe that our school is a safe and nurturing environment. One of our goals is to continue to foster a caring community at our school where everyone feels safe and has a sense of belonging. To facilitate this effort we have implemented a state endorsed school wide safety program called Bully Proofing Your School with the “Bully Busting Curriculum.”
Information is available and will be updated on our website www.garwoodschools.org and through the various school communications during the school year. Our efforts will be most effective when the parental community, the administration, the staff, and the students all have a shared belief that kindness and a respect for each other is of great value in our school and contributes to a positive environment for better academic performance. Bullying and aggressive behaviors will not have a place at our school.
BULLYING~A Learned Behavior Research clearly indicated that bullying is a learned behavior and is detrimental to the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of ALL involved– bullies, targets and the bystanders who witness it.(DuPage Anti-Bullying Task Force, 2011) Adults must model the behavior they expect…. “Children learn what they live”
