Natural Disasters! Natural disasters occur all around the world, from risky floods and tsunamis, to treacherous forest fires and volcanic eruptions. The ring of fire (Pacific Ocean) is the most common place for these catastrophic disasters for example: Tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes and much more!
Terrifying Tsunamis! What are tsunamis’? Tsunamis’ are treacherous waves pouring in from the wide ocean. They move at great speeds to 500 miles or 805km per hour! What causes a tsunami and what is its process? They are formed when energy from an earthquake jolts the seabed by metres, starting off with large waves moving out from the earthquake’s epicentre. Also, they retain this energy from the earthquake, which means that they can travel entire oceans with limited energy loss. When they reach the shallows near land, it starts to decrease it’s speed but increases its height, which is mainly over 100ft. Then the waves start to crash onto the coast of the land, starting with first waves, then to the others. First waves are not the strongest or biggest, but the other waves are extremely strong and large, knocking down trees, houses and cars in its path. Amazingly, 80% of the world’s tsunamis’ are caused in the most common place, the Ring of Fire. Did you know? Areas like the Sri Lankan resort had almost no warning of the approaching disaster going to hit them (26th of December 2004)!
Frightful forest fires! What are forest fires? Forest fires is a huge mass of uncontrolled fire, occurring mostly in wild, unpopulated areas or anywhere with high temperatures (mainly in forests in the southern part of the globe). Also, there are types of fires called ‘Running crown fires’. These are extremelyhot, and they can travel fast and swiftly, also they change direction very suddenly, difficult for fire fighters to put it out. What causes a forest fire? Mostly, 80% of the worldwide forest fires are caused by humans. Also, they are occasionally caused by the dead matter, for example: leaves, fallen twigs and finally, trees, the main source of forest fires. Finally, forest fires are actually capable of modifying the local weather conditions, sometimes even it’s very own weather condition. Did you know fact! A whopping 1.2 million acres of U.S woodlands burn every year!
Terrible Typhoons! What are Typhoons? Typhoons are dreadful, tropical cyclones in the northern-western Pacific Ocean, causing a huge mass of damage to whoever is caught up in it. Basically, a typhoon is a violent rotating windstorm travelling across the globe. If they are severe, they are known as “severe cyclonic storm”, or “tropical storm”. How are they caused? Typhoons are developed over waters in tropical regions, such as the Philippines, North Atlantic and even parts of Canada! Also, they can travel up to 200 miles per hour, and they have the ability to cause large scale destructions. Did you know? The record breaking typhoon was in 1979 as the largest ever typhoon recorded in the world!
Finally . . . Overall, natural disasters are dreadful, catastrophic moments which cost people’s lives and family, mostly in tropical areas like the Philippines and America. Also, if you ever come across these ghastly disasters, be prepared . . .
