A person who • Believes the best about ourselves and our students • Teaches people not just content. • Believes students want to learn content and behavior. • Focuses on positive assumptions. (“They haven’t learned the appropriate behavior” rather than “They are bad kids.”

  3. Who is an effective teacher? An effective teacher maintains Inner Authority by • taking responsibility • apologizing when needed • admitting mistakes • expressing sincerity • being grounded • being empathetic

  4. Who is an effective teacher? An effective teacher demonstrates successful strategies such as • Flexibility • Consistency • Firmness • Organization • Humor • Patience • Fairness *Rick Smith: Conscious Classroom Management

  5. Who is an effective teacher? • Harry Wong’s (2001) three characteristics of an effective teacher: 1. Positive expectations for student success 2. Good classroom manager 3. Knows how to design lessons for student mastery

  6. Managing a class • Prepare your environment • Introduce yourself • Teach discipline procedures, and routines • Systemize your record keeping • Plan and conduct instruction

  7. To think about How would you arrange your classroom for the following instructional activities? • Use small group activities • Teach rules and procedures • Give a lecture • Show a video • Perform a skit • Individual study
