  1. DECISION MAKING 101 It’s all about taking responsibility.

  2. Before you decide consider these things: How much time should I spend before I make a decision? Is there such a thing as snap judgment? When to trust my ‘gut’? What to do when someone ELSE is the decision maker?

  3. Will my decision help or hurt? Positive outcomes? Negative outcomes? Short term/long term? For whom? Myself? Family? Club or group? Community? Can I live with my choice? Have I examined all options? Have I asked a reliable person for advice?

  4. Step One: IDENTIFY THE PURPOSE • What exactly IS the problem? • Why should it be solved? • Who are the affected parties? • Is there a deadline or time-line?

  5. Step Two: • Gather information • Accurate and reliable • Learn all you can about your issue.

  6. Step Three: • Judging alternatives / prioritizing • On what basis will your judge options? • Is there a larger goal to consider? • Job? • Gpa? • Group accountability? • Family? • Community?

  7. Step Four: • Brainstorm all possible avenues!

  8. Step Five: • Evaluate Alternatives and Options • Use your ‘judgment’ guidelines. (step 3) • Compare positives vs. negatives.

  9. Step Six: • Choose the best option!

  10. Step Seven: • Execute your plan of action.

  11. Step eight: • Evaluate end results. • Anything learned? • Corrections needed? • Outcomes as planned?

  12. WHAT about my ‘gut’ instinct? Use caution. Your ‘gut’ kick is from the emotional side. Wise to test before proceeding. May feel like instinct but really based on vast field of outside experiences and memories.

  13. Face it, not ALL decisions are yours to make! Person with power may not be right, may not be the best, nor the smartest. Learn how to influence decision makers! No whining that “life is not fair”.

  14. “Speak up” strategies: • Spend more time developing ideas to make things better, less time in the blame game. • Go for the big battles, and leave trivial details aside. • Challenge on ethical issues of integrity. • Think about the greater good in your approach. • Present your ideas to the ‘decision maker’ in a positive light. • It is not your job to ‘buy’, only to ‘sell’.

  15. Take a few moments to review good decision making strategies.
