  1. Equivalent(virtual) Photon Approximation Monte Carlo Calculationsof Neutron rates from Al windows and Deuterium gasPavelDegtiarenkoPresented by Richard Lindgren

  2. RTPC Target Cell Parameters from JixieLuminosity =10 37 cm-2 s-1About 50 uA on 20 cm long T=20K and P=2 Atm Deuterium gas target

  3. Neutron Rate Calculations • For Al + D2 gas at 20 deg the max neutron rate = 6 x 10 -7 e -1 sr-1 • For D2 gas alone, the rate = 4 x 10 -7 e -1 sr-1 Scales with thickness • Using Luminosity 10 37 cm-2 s-1the neutron rate =2.4 x10 9/sec into 4pi • Looks hopeless for neutron detection from deuterium. • Suppose you have a segmented array of 5 cm x 5 cm scintillators or smaller at 2 m or even further away from the target until the rate was tolerable. eg. Rate =4.7 x 105/s per scintillator counter for 5 cm x 5 cm at 2 m. This assumes that the dominant source of neutrons is from the target and not the room. • For hydrogen gas I don’t have the neutron background numbers but it would be less and probably due mostly from the neutrons in the Al chamber window.
