  2. A SECOND self-read of BOTH articles! • 1) In a DIFFERENT COLOR PEN - • Argue from the other side! Argue with yourself! • Point out things that people who DON’T agree with you might say… write those in the margins • 2) Highlight the POWERFUL words used • Especially those that explain and/or clarify the main points • The ones that are used to show the LOGIC!!! (logos) • Those that pull at the emotion strings (pathos)

In Shannon Brownlee’s Sacramento Bee newspaper article “It’s Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat” (January 5, 2003), she argues that the fast food industry is almost solely responsible for the ever-growing waistline of the American public. She notes that it is the result of “consumer manipulation” (paragraph 6) and that it is not a “matter of individual responsibility” (paragraph 19), even though she agrees that we are “ultimately responsible” (paragraph 24) for what we eat.
